“Color-Coding” is an extremely effective visual technique that can help students to understand relationships in Math and
the world.
Fact Families are 3 numbers that stay together to form 4 equations. No other numbers will live in that same family house.
Each equation will contain each of the family members in alternating positions.
Fact Families without doubles, for example; 1+9=10, will always have four facts; two addition math sentences and two
subtraction sentences. We often say in class that “Red + Blue = Black and Blue + Red = Black”. We can demonstrate Color-
Coded Facts and Turn-Around facts by using connecting cubes to show 1 red and 9 blue cubes and just turn around the
stick to reverse it. Students love to color-code their pages too with red, blue and black crayons.
