Storage Silos are very important structure containing a large weight into a compact volume that

is lumped over a low height supporting structure. Their response under earthquake loads if not
evaluated properly shall lead to catastrophic failure. In case of silo design codal provisions based
on approximate analysis leads to conservative design and exact 3D finite element time history
analysis of silos under seismic action is computationally very expensive. Literature review
reveals that different approaches of contained material modeling each resulting in to different
response from the structure. This motivated the to take up present research which aims analysis
of elevated steel silos structure by pushover analysis under different types mass modeling
techniques to earthquake forces. Push over analysis simple yet simulates in field situation
accurately. Further its results in performance-based design that considers ductility and
redundancies effect in response to resist earthquake forces.

The present study compares the seismic performance of elevated steel silos using pushover
analysis. Further study evaluates the effect of different types of mass modeling of the ensiled
material three different approaches are Janssen mass modeling approach (IS codal provisions),
Lumped mass modeling approach and 3D solid mass modeling approach (3D solid finite
elements).Parametric study also compares response for different silos aspect(slenderness) ratios
and silo fill conditions . The pushover analysis results i.e. capacity curves, performance point,
state of hinge and inelastic actions in the silo supporting structure evaluates the silo response in
lieu of ductility, strength and displacement under different conditions. Realistic and accurate
pushover analysis for silo structures presented here paves the way to efficient structure design
considering the effect of various parameters considered in present study.
