Contributing Factors to Stanford Community

Being raised in a strict Jain family, I have tried to conform to the principles of Jainism. Jains have a unique lifestyle and along
with rigorous fasting, coping up with lifelong austere limitations in the diet had been tough, especially during social gatherings
but I managed to strike a balance between my religious beliefs and social life.
Social work has been more of a responsibility than a moral obligation for me. Engaging with many small communities of India
has helped in making me aware of their culture and the challenges they face in the path towards a progressive change.
Also, I have been a part of my college fraternity group, and currently, I am an integral part of a motorcycle faction and go for
road trips with my biker circle.
The experiences gained from a broad spectrum of social interactions would help me blend with other students and assist me in
earning a relevant position in the student community at Stanford.

MECHANICAL ENGINEERING
MS SUPPLEMENTARY INFORMATION

Name Dhruv Shripal Shah

1. What are your goals for after you complete the MS program? List in order of preference. Note:
Applicants aiming to obtain a PhD at Stanford should apply directly to the PhD program, not the
MS program.

Goal 1 Obtain a new position in industry/at a company

Goal 2 I would consider continuing on to a PhD program at Stanford depending on my MS
Goal 3
Goal 4
Other

2. Briefly comment on your primary motivation for seeking an MS in Mechanical Engineering as

related to your career ambitions.
On realising my niche for welding technologies through course work and practical internships, I have been
researching in the field of 'Friction Stir Additive Manufacturing' for the past 12 months. With proper parameter
selection and inter-alloy feasibility, a composite alloy structure can be prepared through this technique.
Although the wide spectrum of materials that can be manufactured and the benefits of solid-state welding
over traditional welding, a great deal of this field is uncharted and very limited experimental work has been
published. After exploring FSAM of AL 6061 and successfully optimising the parameters for the same, weld
defects are consistently being observed in the trials conducted for Dissimilar FSAM of Al and Cu, and on
consulting experts, the advice was the use of better machinery and different tool geometry. An MS at Stanford
university will definitely provide a stimulating environment to complete my research and culminate my
knowledge in Mechanical Engineering.

3. Briefly describe an activity (academic or not) that you initiated and involved independent
inquiry, e.g. a technical project, or an extracurricular activity that you planned and executed.
What did you learn?
I was a part of the event management committee of the technical festival 'Tesseract' of my University and
was elected as the Sponsorship head for the 2nd term. The funding of the festival was limited on the financial
help received from the college. The sponsorship committee, led by me, devised various ingenious marketing
strategies and reached out to many companies. Along with completing sponsorship deals with many firms, my
team and I have composed formal meetings with BMW India and Ducati India and brewed long term deals
with them. An extravagant and one of a kind festival was possible due to the surplus fund owing to the efforts
of the sponsorship team. The success of the fest inspired our juniors to follow our lead and our work laid the
foundation of sponsorship techniques for the upcoming events. On a personal level, it bolstered my belief of
approaching a problem in unique ways and thinking out of the box rather than sticking to the conventional
methods.

were challenged. How did you handle the situation, and what did you learn?
