CRITICAL ANALYSIS

Answer the following questions and put them on your own words based on their
concepts and your understanding.

1. Why is it important to study the social and political context of the century Rizal
grew up in to understand his life thoughts, and works? (10 points)

Studying the context during Rizal’s life during the Spanish rule can give us
insights to the circumstances that resulted in Rizal’s actions and motives
against the Spanish that eventually led to our liberation from the Spanish
rule and modern day Philippines.

2. Discuss how Cavite Mutiny and the execution of GOMBURZA contributed to the
growth of Filipino nationalism and decline of the Spanish rule. (10 points)

On January 20, 1872, a brief uprising of 200 Filipino troops and workers at
the Spanish arsenal located in Cavite. However, the mutiny was quickly
defeated and its participants disposed of. The Spanish used this incident
as an excuse to further oppress the Filipinos. This injustice further
angered the Philippines nationalistic movement

In February 15, 1872, the Spanish authorities made the Cavite mutiny
sound worse and used it to justify the capture of Filipinos calling for
governmental reform and were accused of helping the mutineers. After a
short trial, three Filipino priests were executed namely, José Burgos,
Jacinto Zamora and Mariano Gómez. These three priests became martyrs
that served the cause of Philippines independence.
