Rizal and His Family

Answer the following questions:
1. Of all the members of Jose Rizal's family, who do you think had been the most
influential to his life? Explain why.

Teodora Alonso opened Rizal’s eyes to the world along all of its beauty and
injustices. She was his first teacher and from her Rizal learned the value of reading for
acquiring knowledge to grew to value time as a gift that can never be replaced. Because
of the values Rizal learned from his mother, he became one of the best students during
his time in Spain. His mother taught him generosity, entrepreneurship and to make the
world a better place for those who are more unfortunate in life.

2. What can you say about Jose Rizal's relationship with his parents and siblings?

Rizal’s relationship with his siblings seems to be excellent. However, his

relationship with his mother as Rizal grew up slowly deteriorated because of his
mother being highly faithful to the catholic faith this conflicted with Rizal’s goals
of dismantling the Spanish colonial rule, many of which happen to be catholic as
well.
