Janma Kuṇḍalī vs. Gocara
◦ The Bhāva and Rāśi results of a Graha that is derived in the Janma Kuṇḍalī,
should also be derived from the Gocara Kuṇḍalī. For instance, when Sūrya is
in the Lagna Bhāva in either Janma or Gocara Kuṇḍalī, similar results should
be expected.
◦ While the Janma Kuṇḍalī results indicate the overall pattern in life, the
Gocara results are those that are due at the moment.

Gocara Workshop | Sarajit Poddar (aka Varahamihira) 2/2/2019 14

Importance of Aṣṭakavarga
◦ A Graha gives auspicious results despite being in a Aśubha Rāśi or Bhāva, if
the Aṣṭakavarga is favourable.
◦ For Gocara, the Bhinnāṣṭakavarga of the concerned Graha and the
Sarvāṣṭakavarga of the Kuṇḍalī plays a crucial role.
◦ 4 or more Rekhās in the Bhinnāṣṭakavarga and 28 or more in the
Sarvāṣṭakavarga is considered favourable.

Gocara Workshop | Sarajit Poddar (aka Varahamihira) 2/2/2019 15

Graha’s Kakṣyā
◦ When a Rāśi is divided into 8 parts of 3° 45’, each of them is called a Kakṣyā.
Kakṣyā normally mean an orbit or path.
◦ Each of these 8 Kakṣyās are mapped to a Graha in the order of their mean
speeds, from Śani to Lagna.
◦ 1. Śani 00° 00’ to 03° 45’
2. Bṛhaspati 03° 45’ to 07° 30’
3. Maṅgala 07° 30’ to 11° 15’
4. Sūrya 11° 15’ to 15° 00’
5. Śukra 15° 00’ to 18° 45’
6. Budha 18° 45’ to 22° 30’
7. Candra 22° 30’ to 26° 15’
8. Lagna 26° 15’ to 30° 00’

Gocara Workshop | Sarajit Poddar (aka Varahamihira) 2/2/2019 16

Kakṣyā usage
◦ A Graha is most effective in giving his results when he transits his own
Kakṣyā in a Rāśi.
◦ A Graha gives favourable results when he transits the Kakṣyā of a Graha
who has contributed a Rekha in that Rāśi.
◦ For example, Budha has contributed a Rekha in Vṛścika Rāśi in Bṛhaspati’s
Aṣṭakavarga. This indicates that Bṛhaspati passing through Budha’s Kakṣyā
(18° 45’ to 22° 30’) will give favourable results. Such favourable results can be
mainly expected in the matters governed by Budha.

AM SESSION 11:00 to 13:00
GOCARA OF DAŚĀ
& BHUKTI LORDS

Gocara Workshop | Sarajit Poddar (aka Varahamihira) 2/2/2019 18

Viñśottarī Dasa is a vry important timing
system in Jyotiṣa shastra. Its wide applicability
made it very popular among the Jyotiṣīs.
However, it is filled with challenges.
Why does the
Gocara of the Many times, it is difficult to pinpoint a specific
event in a period which spans across years and
Daśā-Bhukti months.

Lords matter? We need some principles that can be used to

pinpoint events with the help of the Gocara
of Mahādaśā and the Bhukti lord, and that of
Lagneśa, Guru, Sūrya and Candra.

2/2/2019 Gocara Workshop | Sarajit Poddar (aka Varahamihira) 19

2/2/2019 Gocara Workshop | Sarajit Poddar (aka Varahamihira) 20

One must be careful here as we are attaching too
much importance to the Daśā lord.

There are many nakshatra based as well as many

Rāśi based Daśās. An important question here is, do
the principles mentioned here apply to all the
Dasa systems or only a specific Daśā system?

In my humble opinion, the technique described

Which Daśā?
applies only to the Viñśottarī Dasa initiated from
Candra, as this is the only Daśā having universal
applicability.

Candra represents the mind and its interactions with

the external environment and hence becomes an
important factor. 2/2/2019 21

Gocara Workshop | Sarajit Poddar (aka Varahamihira)

Since Gocara from Candra is very important for
judging the not only the quality of time, but also
the quantum of auspicious, and inauspicious events
- there is a logical connection of such Gocara to the
Viñśottarī Dasa initiated from Candra.

Nonetheless, the Gocara of grahas reckoned from

the Lagna and their various yogas formed with natal
Grahas are also significantly important.
Why Candra?

The results are modified based on their Gocara

position from Janma Rāśi, as well as Aṣṭakavarga.

it childbirth, financial gains or some other gains?
Daśā-Bhukti ◦ The results are expected to be different even though
Bṛhaspati’s position from the Janma Rāśi and Janma Lagna
lords (in Gocara) remains the same. What can cause the variation
in the results?

Gocara Workshop | Sarajit Poddar (aka Varahamihira) 2/2/2019 24

An important factor is Age group and

difference is the Dasa and Bhukti running

and Bhuktis, there is shift in the priorities
in one’s life.

Phaladīpikā 20.34.
◦ When a Graha whose Dasa is in progress transits through his Svakṣetra, Ucca
or a Mitra Rāśi, he promotes the prosperity of the Bhava he owns when
counted from the Lagna, provided the said Graha is endowed with full
strength at the birth time as well.

Gocara Workshop | Sarajit Poddar (aka Varahamihira) 2/2/2019 26

Phaladīpikā 20.35.
◦ When a Graha whose Dasa is operational is weak, eclipsed by Sūrya's rays, in
Nīca or Śatru Rāśi at birth, he during his Gocara through any Bhava causes
the total destruction of that Bhava.

Gocara Workshop | Sarajit Poddar (aka Varahamihira) 2/2/2019 27

◦ In Gocara, when the Mahādaśā lord occupies its Ucca
kṣetra, there is auspicious results undoubtedly. However,
based on the natal placement of the Graha, there are
variations of the results. Let us say, in someone’s case,
Bṛhaspati may be placed in Ucca in natal chart, while in
Explanation another person’s case, Bṛhaspati is placed in Nīca. Will the
results be the same in both cases? It is logical to assume
that the results will be different. One way to quantify the
quantum of auspicious and inauspicious results is to
multiply he Guṇāṅka assigned to the Graha based on its
Rāśi placement.

Gocara Workshop | Sarajit Poddar (aka Varahamihira) 2/2/2019 28

The Guṇāṅkas
◦ The Guṇāṅkas are (1) Ucca: 1.00, (2) Mūlatrikoṇa: 0.75, (3) Svakṣetra: 0.5,
(4) Mitra kṣetra: 0.25, (5) Sama kṣetra: 0.125. (6) Nīca-Śatru-Asta: 0.00.
◦ For instance, when a Graha occupies it’s Svakṣetra in Natal chart and a Mitra
kṣetra in Gocara, the extent of auspicious results will be 0.5 x 0.25 i.e., 0.125.
◦ While judging the quantum of auspiciousness, the exceptions narrated by
classics such as Bṛhat Jataka should always be considered, for instance,
Bṛhaspati gives results like Ucca in Kumbha and Śani gives excellent results
in Bṛhaspati’s Rasis. A good understanding of the Rāśi placements of Grahas
is a requirement to judge such variations in the results.

Gocara Workshop | Sarajit Poddar (aka Varahamihira) 2/2/2019 29

Gocara through Śubha Rāśi
Phaladīpikā 20.60.
◦ During the several periods over which a Dasa may extend, the good or evil
effect is to be determined which reference to the particular house counted
from Candra, which the lord of the Dasa may occupy for the time being in its
progress through its orbit.

Gocara Workshop | Sarajit Poddar (aka Varahamihira) 2/2/2019 30

Gocara through Aśubha Rāśi
Phaladīpikā 20.37.
◦ If the planet whose Bhukti is in progress should during the course of his
Gocara pass through his depression or Śatru Rāśi or become eclipsed there is
much misery.
◦ Should he pass through his Sva, Ucca Rāśi or be Vakrī, the effects be good.

Candra’s
Gocara ◦ When Candra passes through a Rāśi which happen to be
the Ucca Rāśi of the Mahādaśā Lord, or his Mitra Rāśi, the
Phaladīpikā results are Śubha.
◦ Likewise, Candra passing through an Upacaya, a Trikoṇa or
20.36.| the 7th from the Mahādaśā lord, the results are Śubha.

Phaladīpikā ◦ If Candra’s passes through a different place, the results are

20.61.

Gocara Workshop | Sarajit Poddar (aka Varahamihira) 2/2/2019 32

The Impacted Bhava
Phaladīpikā 20.62.
◦ In the favorable positions mentioned in the previous sloka (20.61), the Rāśi
occupied by Candra should represent some one of the 12 Bhavas, Lagna,
wealth, etc. at the time of birth.
◦ Candra in one of these favorable positions (from the Mahādaśā lord)
promotes prosperity in respect of the Bhava represented by the Rāśi
occupied.
◦ In the unfavorable positions, the Bhava represented by the Rāśi suffers
damage.

Gocara Workshop | Sarajit Poddar (aka Varahamihira) 2/2/2019 33

Surya’s & Bṛhaspati's Gocara
Phaladīpikā 20.38
◦ When Sūrya passes through the Bhukti lord’s Ucca Rāśi, good results
promised by the Bhukti lord are manifested. The same effects are felt when
Bṛhaspati transits the place.
◦ As regard a Graha whose Bhukti is inauspicious, the evil effects are felt when
Sūrya in his Gocara passes through the Bhukti-lord’s Śatru or Nīca Rāśi.

Transit of Śani in the 1st, 4th, 8th & 10th houses from the
Āruṛha Lagna goes by the name of Kaṇṭaka Sani (Kaṇṭaka
means thorn and the term imply that the person is hurt so
much that he limps) and is extremely inauspicious for
career and financial wellbeing of a person.

If it happens to be in bad position from the Lagna and

Śani’s Gocara Candra as well, then the person passes through serious hard
times.

The transit in the 4th house is known as Ardha-Kaṇṭaka

(half-Kaṇṭaka) and lesser worse than other positions. The
transit of Śani however in the 12th from the Āruṛha is
supposed to give Raja-yoga and while transiting in the 3rd
and 6th from the Āruṛha gives many benefits.

Gocara Workshop | Sarajit Poddar (aka Varahamihira) 2/2/2019 44

The Nāḍī literature deals with the subject of Gocara in great
detail. In fact, most of the Nāḍī texts such as Deva Keralam,
Bhṛgu Nāḍī, Dhruva Nāḍī and Añśa Nāḍī detailed many exquisite
techniques which one must not ignore.

While, the general Jyotiṣa texts have limited their Gocara

assessment with Gocara of Grahas from the Janma Rāśi, the Nāḍī
The Source literature have then the subject to an all new level. We find here
mention of many great Gocara techniques such as Navāñśa
Gocara, Gocara of a Graha over a Natal Graha or its Trikoṇa and
several others.

The dictums given here are extracted from the texts of Śrī CS
Patel, whose yeoman service to the world of Jyotiṣa can hardly be
exaggerated.

2/2/2019 Gocara Workshop | Sarajit Poddar (aka Varahamihira) 45

Sūrya’s Gocara
◦ Dhruva Nāḍī 28. Bad results follow when Sūrya transits through the 6th,
8th or 12th house and on a weekday ruled by these lords. Happiness and
inflow of wealth result in a month and on a weekday ruled by the lords of
the 5th or the 9th.
◦ Notes: When Sūrya passes through the Rāśi containing the Mantreśa (5L) or
Bhagyeśa (9L), then the native gains fortune on the weekday governed by the
said two lords. For instance, for a native born in Dhanu Lagna, Mantreśa is
Maṅgala who is in Siṅha Rāśi, conjunct with Bhagyeśa Sūrya. When Sūrya
passes through Siṅha Rāśi, then on a Maṅgalavāra or Ravivāra, the native
gains happiness or wealth.

Śani & the 8th
◦ Deva Keralam 1.96.1058, 2.168.913, 3.210.4827. The house from which the
8th house transited by Śani and the other three houses for which the
respective 8th houses when aspected by Śani, suffer afflictions one must
obtain Śani transit results from Lagna onwards in the same way.
◦ Deva Keralam 2.120.389. Physical distress results due to transit of Śani in
the Rāśi denoted Randhreśa’s Navāñśa or a Trikoṇa thereof or the Rāśi(s)
aspected by the Randhreśa (8L), on the degree of the Randhreśa’s dispositor.
◦ Deva Keralam 2.111.300. Śani transiting the Rāśi represented by the
Randhreśa’s Navāñśa counted from the Janma Lagna or Jama Rāśi or Trikoṇa
thereof on the degree of its dispositor cause physical ailments.

Gocara Workshop | Sarajit Poddar (aka Varahamihira) 2/2/2019 47

Bṛhaspati & 11th
◦ Deva Keralam 2.54.3203. When Bṛhaspati comes to the Rāśi represented by
the Navāñśa occupied by the Lābheśa or its Trikoṇas, on the degree of its
dispositor, the native obtains valuable articles, conveyance etc. Notes: When
Bṛhaspati aligns with the Lābheśa or the Lābha Bhāva, he causes gain and
promises success in endeavour.

Ill health
◦ Dhruva Nāḍī p174a. (1) When Śani in transit coincides with the Sphuṭa of
Janma Sūrya over its Janma Rāśi or its Trikoṇa, the native’s father’s health
suffers or the native himself suffers illness or sorrow due to death of an
elderly male relative.
◦ (2) Likewise, when Śani in transit coincides over the degree of natal Candra
over its natal Rāśi or its Trikoṇa, the native’s mother’s health suffers or the
native himself suffers illness or sorrow due to death of an elderly female
relative.
◦ (3) Maṅgala - health troubles to Siblings - death to cousins

Gocara Workshop | Sarajit Poddar (aka Varahamihira) 2/2/2019 50

Danger to Father
◦ Deva Keralam 1.73.757-758. Note Sūrya’s Navāñśa at birth. When Śani
transit the Rāśi or its Trikoṇas, on the degree of the dispositor (Sūrya’s Rāśi
lord in the Rāśi Kuṇḍalī), the native’s father suffers from ailments. In
addition, native’s expenditure exceeds his income.
◦ Deva Keralam 3.163.4171. Śani transiting the Rāśi identical with the
Navāñśa occupied by Sūrya or the 9th lord or a Trikoṇa thereof on the degree
of its dispositor promote father’s death.
◦ Bhṛgu Nāḍī P443. When Śani transits a Rāśi identical with Sukheśa’s
Navāñśa or Trikoṇa thereof or a Rāśi(s) aspected by the Sukheśa, the native’s
father has troubles. Notes: Sukha Bhāva is 8th from the 9th house, the Kāraka
Bhāva for the father.

Gocara Workshop | Sarajit Poddar (aka Varāhamihira) 2/2/2019 51

Danger to Mother
◦ Bhṛgu Nāḍī p.408. When Śani transits the 6th house from Candra, native’s
mother has misfortune, so say all Nāḍīs. Notes: Mother may suffer from
serious health trouble or she passes away.
◦ Deva Keralam 2.185.1120. When Śani comes to the Rāśi identical with the
Sukheśa’s Navāñśa counted from the Janma Rāśi or a Trikoṇa thereof on the
degree of the dispositor (of the Sukheśa), the person’s mother faces her end.
◦ Deva Keralam 1.190.2124. The 12th lord transiting the Rāśi of Śani,
Lābheśa (11L) in Dhanu Rāśi and Śani’s Gocara through the Randhra Bhāva
(8H) promote mother’s death.

Gocara Workshop | Sarajit Poddar (aka Varahamihira) 2/2/2019 52

Danger to Children
◦ Deva Keralam 1.32.305. Evils to native’s child may be foretold when Śani
transits the Rāśi identical with Vyāyeśa’s Navāñśa or its Trikoṇa or a Rāśi
aspected by the Vyāyeśa at birth on the degree of its (Vyāyeśa’s) dispositor.

Gocara Workshop | Sarajit Poddar (aka Varahamihira) 2/2/2019 53

Danger to Paternal
Grandfather
◦ Deva Keralam 2.181.1074. Rāhu transiting the Rāśi identical with the
Vyāyeśa’s Rāśi or Navāñśa on the degrees of its dispositor cause end of the
paternal grandfather. Notes: (1) Paternal grandfather = 5th, (2) Health of
paternal grandfather = 8th from 5th = 12th, (3) Kāraka for paternal
grandfather = Bṛhaspati. (4) Rāhu is opposed to Bṛhaspati.

Gocara Workshop | Sarajit Poddar (aka Varahamihira) 2/2/2019 54

Danger to Spouse
◦ Deva Keralam 3.251.5393. Death (or severe suffering) to the spouse occurs
when the Dhaneśa (2L) transits the Lagna or aspects it, Śani aspects the
Dhana Bhāva (2H) and Kāraka Śukra transits the Rāśi occupied by Rāhu in
Janma Kuṇḍalī. Notes: Dhana Bhāva is the Randhra Bhāva (2H) from the
Dārā Bhāva (7H), governing wife.

Gocara Workshop | Sarajit Poddar (aka Varahamihira) 2/2/2019 55

Danger to Kinsmen
◦ Deva Keralam 2.44.3094. When Rāhu transits the 11th from either Lagna or
Candra, one incurs grief and enmity with his own kinsmen or witnesses their
destruction.

Gocara Workshop | Sarajit Poddar (aka Varahamihira) 2/2/2019 56

Danger to a Relative
◦ Deva Keralam 1.181½.182½. In the sub-period of Candra or of Bṛhaspati
during the Daśā of the Randhreśa counted from the Janma Rāśi, there is
untimely death of a relative equal to the native (in age).
◦ Notes: For instance, one is born with Vṛścika Rāśi, Śani’s Nakṣatra.
Randhreśa from the Janma Rāśi is Budha. In Budha’s Daśā, Candra’s or
Bṛhaspati’s Bhukti, there is demise of a relative equivalent to the native in
age.

Gocara Workshop | Sarajit Poddar (aka Varahamihira) 2/2/2019 57

◦ Dhruva Nāḍī p174b. (1) When Bṛhaspati transits over
Marriage & natal Śukra or his Trikoṇa positions, the native’s marriage
takes place. (2) When Bṛhaspati transits over natal
Birth of Bṛhaspati or its Trikoṇa positions, birth of children takes
place. Notes: The Dhruva Nāḍī results are effective during
Children transit of Śani or Guru through full Navāñśa occupied by
the Graha.

Gocara Workshop | Sarajit Poddar (aka Varahamihira) 2/2/2019 58

Deva Keralam (2) p47.v471. When
Bṛhaspati is in accelerated motion
(combustion) and at the same time
Śani is in retrogression, the whole
world wails aloud in grief, particularly
Mundane in the southern region.
Principles Deva Keralam (3) p59.v2787. When
Gocara Ketu conjuncts Śani, kings

the base layer.

There are 16 Svara varṇa or the vowels. There are total 52

Svara Varṇa
There are four layers in the Cakra and in each of the four
layers, the four corner boxes are assigned one vowel each.
Therefore, there are 4 * 4 = 16 boxes assigned to 16 vowels.

There are 36 Vyañjana varṇa, but they are assigned 20

Akṣara – boxes. The shortfall of 16 is divided into 4 centre boxes each
4 Vyañjana 20 containing 4. We can say that 16 boxes are allocated 1
Varṇa Akṣara each, added to which 4 boxes contain 5 each,
making a total of 16 * 1 + 5* 4 = 16 + 20 = 36.

The Tithis are grouped into 5 groups viz., Nanda, Bhadra,

5 Tithi 5 Jaya, Rikta and Purṇa. The four groups Nanda, Bhadra,
Jaya and Rikta are in the 2nd circle from the centre.

There are 7 Vāras from Somavāra to Śanivāra, who are

4 Kṣema 4, 13, 22 Kṣema means wellbeing. It is mapped to the 4th house in a Kuṇḍalī, that represents happiness (Sukha), comforts, luxuries etc. Auspicious

Pratyak means obstacles, hence this Nakṣatra is avoided for any auspicious activities, else, that may end up having many obstacles. This is
mapped to an auspicious Bhāva, the 5th, however, still the quality is negative, why? This is because, there are some qualities of the 5 th house, that
5 Pratyak 5, 14, 23 are very intense. The 5th house of the natural zodiac is governed by Sūrya, which is a very fierce Graha. In addition, 5 th house is the Bhāvāt Bhāvam Inauspicious
of the 3rd house, indicating things where one need to put intense effort, “to overcome obstacles”. 3 rd represents effort, and Thus, the 5th indicate
multiplication of effort. This aspect of 5th however is not visible in the Bhāva analysis, while it does in the Nakṣatra analysis.

Sādhaka means achievement. This is what one gets after overcoming obstacles and difficulties. Although 6 th house in a Kuṇḍalī is predominantly

disabilities and the likes of it. Thus, this Nakṣatra is considered highly positive.

Vadha means death. Another name of this Nakṣatra is Naidhana, meaning the same. This is mapped to the 7 th Bhāva in a Kuṇḍalī, which is a

inauspicious Tārās, Vipada, Pratyak and Vadha, it is the Vadha that is the most dangerous.

Mitra means friends, close associates, well-wishers, kinsmen and everyone who supports the native in the ordeal of life. This is mapped to the 8th
house, representing danger. How is it that the Nakṣatra representing friends be mapped to an untoward Bhāva? The answer lies in how one looks

at the Randhra Bhāva. It is the Bhāva that governs over our longevity (note, it’s not death), so favourable Grahas towards 8 th and the fortification
of the 8th Bhāva grant long life. Here good health is our friend. Another important aspect of the 8 th house which sometimes get unnoticed is that

Adhimitra means, very dear friend, i.e., one who can sacrifice own life to save the life of his friend. There are very few who can do that, or for that

The Sannāḍī Cakra
Sannāḍī (सन्नाडी) is derived from Shad-Nāḍī means 6 nāḍīs. The term Nāḍī is generally used to mean something that is sensitive
or vital. In the human body, there are many Nāḍīs that represent the energy centres, and they control the vital functions in the
body. The chief among the Nāḍīs in our body are Ida, Pingala and Suṣumnā.

Coming back to Jyotiṣa, the Sannāḍī group of Nakṣatras counted from Janma Candra and each of them are called a Nāḍī. These
Nāḍīs have a wide range of applicability. They can be used in both Janma and Gocara.

In the Janma Kuṇḍalī, if these Nāḍīs are occupied by Krūragrahas, who are also low in dignity, then in Daśā-Antardaśās of these
Krūragrahas, miseries and troubles can be expected. Likewise, the periods of the lord of the afflicted Nāḍī can also be
troublesome.

Applying the principles of the Sarvatobhadra Cakra, when Krūragrahas transit a Nāḍī or cause Vedha, great suffering in the area
governed by the Nāḍī is indicated. The 6 Nāḍīs are: (1) Janma Nāḍī 1, (2) Karma Nāḍī 10, (3) Saṅghātika Nāḍī 16, (4)
Sāmudāyika Nāḍī 18, (5) Vaināśika Nāḍī 23, and (6) Mānasa Nāḍī 25.

2/2/2019 Gocara Workshop | Sarajit Poddar (aka Varahamihira) 63

Depending on the usage of the 27 or 28 Nakṣatras one can arrive at 2 different
sets of Tārās. For instance, one born in Uttarāṣāṛhā, the inclusion or exclusion of
Abhijit can lead to Karma Tārā in Bharaṇī or Kṛttikā. Now it is not right for the
Karma Nāḍī to fall in Bharaṇī, because, as per Navatārā Scheme, the Janma and
Karma Tārā are lorded by the same Nakṣatra lord, which in this case is Sūrya.

Therefore, to maintain the sanctity of the 27 Nakṣatra scheme and the allocation
of lordship, we can’t include Abhijit in the counting of the special Nakṣatras from

27 vs. 28 the Janma Tārā.

Nakṣatras We can infer that, the intercalary Nakṣatra, Abhijit although used in the
Sarvatobhadra Cakra, it should not be counted for ascertaining the special
Nakṣatras.

Likewise, when Birth occurs in Abhijit, it can’t can considered and should be
mapped to either Uttarāṣāṛhā or Śravaṇa, depending on the specific portion of
Abhijit. If we ignore this important point, it won’t be possible to reconcile
between the 27th and 28th Nakṣatra schemes.

The Janma Nādī
◦ This is the Candra’s Nakṣatra and is also called the Janma Nakṣatra, Janma Tārā, Janmārkṣa
or Janmabhā. This is the most important Nakṣatra in both natal or transit analysis as it hosts
Candra.
◦ In Jyotiṣa, we know that the Kāraka for human life is Candra and hence very important for
human birth and it is the prime sustainer in this virtual world. The body is fine and healthy as
long as the Mind (signified by Candra) relishes the stay in this world and it weathers away
when the Mind has no more need to sustain. It is said that the when the Mind stops relishing
the experiences (good or bad) in this world, there is no more attraction for the soul to re-
incarnate and the body is out of the bondage.
◦ From the brief description of the Nakṣatra and its strong association with Candra, we
understand that the overall experience, sustenance in this world depends on the influences on
the Janma Nāḍī.

Gocara Workshop | Sarajit Poddar (aka Varahamihira) 2/2/2019 65

The Karma Nādī | 10 th

◦ There is a strong association of number 10th with the karma which we are
supposed to do to fulfil the mission for which we have taken birth. In the
Rāśi chart, the 10th house is also the house of Karma and in the scheme of
Nakṣatra, the 10th Nakṣatra from Candra is also associated with Karma.
◦ The influences on this Nakṣatra will determine the access to various
resources which the native can use in fulfilling his work and how easily (or
otherwise) the native will attain the results of his work. This Nakṣatra
becomes very important in muhūrtas related to profession or business, which
involves realization of an objective.

risks could be accepting an unfavorable alliance or partnership with someone
due to financial constrains etc.

Sāmudāyika Nāḍī | 18 th

◦ This means environment. As the name suggests this Nāḍī indicate the
support the native is going to get from the environment etc. For example,
whether the environment is going to be supportive or hostile to the native or
a business enterprise (in mundane astrology) is seen from this Nakṣatra.

Vaināśika Nāḍī | 23 rd

◦ Vināśa means destruction. As the name suggests this Nakṣatra has a strong
bearing on the ways and methods which can cause destruction or trouble to
the wellbeing of the native or the event under consideration. In the analysis
of business enterprise, this has a strong say on the associates, friends and the
partners.

Mānasa Nāḍī | 25 th

◦ Mānasa means the state of the mind. Thus, as the name suggests the
Nakṣatra has a strong bearing on the state of mind of the native at any point
of time, based on the planetary transits. In mundane astrology, it can
represent the state of the mind of people involved such as how peaceful or
how agitated they are.

Other Special suggests the Nakṣatra has a strong bearing on the state of
mind of the native at any point of time, based on the

Nakshatras planetary transits. In mundane astrology, it can represent

the state of the mind of people involved such as how
peaceful or how agitated they are.

Ādhāna Nakṣatra | 19th st
(21 )
◦ Ādhāna means conception. To understand the role of this Nakṣatra in transit analysis, we
need to understand what happens in conception. During conception, the fertilized egg
embeds itself to the wall of the uterus of the mother, which nourishes till delivery of child.
Thus, this Nakṣatra has a strong bearing on the place of activity and how well the place
supports the native or the event (in mundane astrology). This Nakṣatra has a strong bearing
on whether the native will be comfortable or successful in his homeland or abroad. While
benefic influences would make the native stay in his homeland, malefic influences will make
him move away.
◦ There is difference in opinion among the scholars regarding which Nakṣatra should be
treated as the Ādhāna Nakṣatra. While Jataka Pārijāta, Horāratna and Phaladīpikā opine that
the 19th Nakṣatra is the Ādhāna Nakṣatra, Mānasāgarī opines that it is the 21st. My
suggestion is to go with the majority opinion and accept 19th as the Ādhāna Nakṣatra.

Jāti Nakṣatra | 25 th

◦ Jāti means community. This Nakṣatra not only indicate the relationship of
the native with his family members, relatives and friends, but also how well
the native will be supported by his fellow community members. In a business
enterprise, this indicate the relationship between the employer and employees
and among the employees; such as how harmonious they are and how well
they support the business bottom-line.

Deśa Nakṣatra | 26 th

◦ Deśa means country. This Nakṣatra is specifically important in mundane

astrology and it signifies how well the government support an enterprise of a
community such as a political party. This Nakṣatra also assumes great
importance in the horoscopy of national figures and leaders and signify the
support they receive from their government. Thus, is a leader is sent to exile,
this Nakṣatra is the key to look for.

Abhiṣeka Nakṣatra | 27 th

◦ Abhiṣeka means coronations. As the name suggests, this Nakṣatra is

important in mundane astrology which deals with areas related to leadership
such as political astrology or business leadership (CXO’s positions). In
general, this Nakṣatra show the amount of influence, dominance and control
the native has over others. This also indicate how much freedom the native
has and how well the he enjoys the work, such that he becomes his own boss
in that context. When there are negative influences on this Nakṣatra, this can
show fall from power, bondage and exile as well.

vedhas can be Śubha or Krūra. The Vedha caused
by Śubhagrahas are Śubha and those caused by The Vedhas
Krūragrahas are Krūra.

Vāma-vedha
◦ Vāma means left, indicating that the Graha is aspecting in the leftward
direction. Since the Sarvatobhadra cakra moves in a clockwise direction, from
left to right, the leftward aspect indicate that the Graha is in forward
(zodiacal) motion. This can also be said as the aspect in the zodiacal
direction, or in the clockwise direction. The Grahas which are moving faster
than their normal speed (aticāra) is considered to have this sight.

Dakṣiṇa-vedha
◦ Dakṣiṇa means right indicating that the Graha is aspecting in the rightward
direction. Since the Sarvatobhadra cakra moves in a clockwise direction, from
left to right, the rightward aspect indicate that the Graha is in reverse (anti-
zodiacal) or retrograde motion. The Grahas which is retrograde (Vakrī) is
considered to have this sight.

Sammukha-vedha
◦ Sammukha means looking straight, neither right nor left. The Graha which is
moving with its normal speed is said to have this sight.
◦ Now, what is the normal or the mean speed of a Graha? This can be derived
from the mean motion of the Grahas as given in Sūrya Siddhānta and other
Siddhānta Texts.
◦ The Sammukha Vedha is only applicable to the Nakṣatra and not the
intervening elements such as Vowel, Consonant, Rāśi, Tithi and Vāras.

Vakrī Grahas
Horāratna
◦ Owing to there being no uniformity in motion among the other Grahas, three
kinds of Vedhas have been mentioned, Krūra Grahas when retrograde, will
cause intense evil if they are in Vedha position, while Śubha Grahas will do
immense good. Krūra and Śubha Grahas when in rapid motion partake of
the nature of the Grahas they are associated with.
◦ The Śubha Vakrī Grahas grant honour, status, power, position, authority and influence.
Much of the results depend on the Nakṣatra having Vedha from the Graha. For
instance, Sampada Nakṣatra having Vedha can indicate windfall gain of wealth, while
Abhiṣeka Nakṣatra indicate gain of authority and status. A Krūra Vakrī Graha on
the other hand, indicate poverty, pain, suffering, failures in undertaking, destitution and
exile, depending on the Nakṣatras involved.
