Movie Review of “The Miracle Worker”

The movie was entitled “The Miracle Worker” this movie is created to touch every hearts
of individual who feel hopeless for their conditions. In my opinion, this movie can give
you courage and motivates you to feel the hope despite of your disabilities. The movie
is a gripping battle to overcome impossible obstacles and struggle to communicate
pertaining to a deaf-mute and blind children who is taught to understand how to
communicate and to have proper behavior by her teacher.

This movie was a true story of Helen Keller and Annie Sulivan. In the place of Ivy Green
where Helen is living, his family was frustrated of her behavior. Helen Keller was a deaf-
mute and blind child. Sealed off from the world, Helen cannot communicate with
everyone, nor anyone with her. Captain Arthur Keller and Kate Keller parents of Helen
summoned Annie Sulivan of Perkin Institute for blind to help the girl understand the
world. Annie struggled to teach Helen because of her behavior and being spoiled by his
parents. Annie kept Helen for 2 weeks to teach signs though the sense of touch for her
to communicate and agreed by his parents to free Helen from walls of silence and
darkness.

The actors of the movie portrayed their roles effectively and convincing. Annie Sulivan
(Anne Bancroft) in the movie shows the attitude of being patient and the willingness to
help Helen to have language that will drive you to like her character of being a strong
woman despite of her past. Anne Bancroft was one of the actor that has more screen
time in the movie and portrayed his character that will make you feel his struggle in the
movie. Helen (Patty Duke) shows unusual behavior because of her ignorance of how
big the world is which very convincing character that will make you hate her, nor love
her at the end. I hate the first few scenes that Annie was being underestimate by the
father of Helen about her capability to teach his child. James Keller (Andrew Prine) was
one of the characters that you will hate at the few parts of the movie because he was
always talked too much about Helens condition caused by the jealousness of his
parent’s attention.

What I like about the is the scene at the end where Annie seems to be disappointed of
Helens behavior while at the moment of supper, Helen throws his napkin many times
where Annie was annoyed of her behavior. Her mother starts with an argumentation to
let Helen do what she wants and do not take her with him, but his father agreed with the
words of his son James to let Annie take Helen outside. In that moment Annie take
Helen at the pump to fill in the pitcher glass with water, suddenly while Helen is sensing
the flow of water through touching Annie realize that Helen recognize that it was a water
because of that Helen also recognize his mother and father, also Annie as her teacher
and I that scene makes cry and like it. One scene that I don’t like is the part where
Arthur Keller father of Helen wanted to dismiss the service of Annie being a teacher of
her child because of his doubts, but Annie argued and shows them why Helen is having
unusual behavior because of their too much love and presence. Instead of trusting
Annie’s ability to teach their child they show doubt and questioned her capability and
ways to teach Helen.

There are so much lessons in the movie, being a children with disability needs to have
special treatment and education. Understanding them and giving effort to teach them
was the best way to educate them. As what Annie said in the movie “language is more
important to mind than light to the eyes” meaning having language is a powerful
medium to communicate even without eyes. Helen was taught by Annie the language in
the form of sense of touch using hand signs. As a future educator someday this movie
can make you realize that every child needs to be treated according to their needs and
capabilities because every child is unique and who we are to repudiate them in knowing
how big the world is.

I recommend this movie to everyone and everybody will like this inspiring and touching
movie. The MRAA rating of the movie was 12+ which is rated PG 12. The movie was full
of lessons and moments which we can apply in our actual life which is a good movie. If I
will going to rate this movie from 1 to 5, this movie deserves to have a rating of 1.
