A5D DOHC Overview
2
A5D DOHC Overview (Cont.)
The Rio A5D Cam Position Sensor has a target wheel instead of a pin (as used on our
previous systems). The target wheel has the advantage of being able to detect TDC on
both #1 and #3 cylinders. This allows the ECM to initiate a firing sequence 50% faster than
previous systems with the single Cam Position Sensor pin which only allowed for TDC
detection on cylinder #1. The CMP sensor target wheel is mounted on the Intake Cam (which
must be removed if the target wheel needs replacing). As illustrated, there is a white dot on
the Target Wheel which must be positioned on the opposite side of the Cam Pulley Dowel Pin
when installing.
To further reduce NVH, the A5D engine utilizes an aluminum oil pan. When performing oil
changes, be sure to replace the drain plug gasket and torque the drain plug to 22-30 lb/ft.

Engine Management Systems Overview
Kia is proud to announce the addition of Siemens to our line of Engine Management Systems.
The 2001 Rio utilizes a Siemens 16bit microprocessor ECM. Although this system is new to
Kia in the US market, it has been in the Kia World Wide markets for a number of years. Most
of the strategies and operations are similar to the Bosch systems we are familiar with. The
major differences include:
1. The adoption of the Vehicle Speed Sensor (mounted on the right front steering knuckle) for
engine misfire detection cancellation. The ECM detects variations in the time between digital
signals from the VSS to determine road roughness (just as the ECM measures variations in
Crank Angle Sensor signals to determine cylinder misfire). If the time variations from the VSS
reach a pre-determined level, the ECM concludes a “rough road” condition and will cancel the
misfire detection function until the VSS signals return to “normal road” conditions. (This system
allows for the deletion of the Chassis Acceleration Sensor).
2. The Cam Position Sensor uses a target wheel instead of a target pin. This target wheel
sends a 180 degree ON and a 180 degree OFF digital signal to the ECM with every revolution
of the intake cam. Since this signal effectively gives the ECM 2 reference points, (the TDC of
cylinders #1 and #3 can be detected instead of the #1 only detection of earlier systems) the
ECM can now initiate firing sequence at start-up up to 50% faster than on previous vehicles.
3. The Siemens ECM conducts a Fuel Pressure Priming function with the ignition in the ON
position for 4 seconds. After the 4 seconds have elapsed, the ECM interrupts the ground
signal to the Fuel Pump Relay (shutting off the pump) until rotation of the engine crankshaft is
detected by the Crank Position Sensor.
Refer to the 2001 Rio Service Manual for a complete description of the Siemens EMS system.

Transaxle

Clutch
The holding force which is exerted by the pressure plate against the clutch disc is released by a pedal-
operated cable linked to a release lever, release fork, and release bearing.
The clutch pedal is suspended, with the brake pedal, from a support bracket welded to the body. Both
pedals hang from the support bracket on a common pivot bolt secured in position by a nut and two
washers.
From the top of the clutch pedal, the cable extends to a release lever at the transaxle. The clutch
system operates as follows:
When the clutch pedal is pressed, the cable and release lever rotate a shaft that enters the
transaxle clutch housing and connects to the clutch release fork.
As the shaft rotates, the fork slides the release bearing along the transaxle bearing support until
it contacts and releases the pressure plate.
When the pedal is released, springs attached to the support bracket and release lever return
the clutch release components to the normal applied position.
Clutch pedal free play is adjusted where the cable passes through the release lever. A nut on the
threaded end of the cable is used to reposition the pin that engages the release lever. Repositioning
the pin adjusts pedal free play by lengthening or shortening the cable.

ST-C Manual Tranaxle
The ST-C Manual Transaxle in the 2001 Rio is a 5 speed fully scyncronized (including reverse)
unit. The adoption of the reverse synchronizer makes shifting into reverse effortless. In
addition, Kia has included a double synchronizer ring at 2nd gear to decrease shifting effort at
the 1-2 shift point and increase serviceability. Some of the specifications for the ST-C
Transaxle are:

Automatic Transaxle Overview
The 2001 Rio is equipped with a F4AEL-K electronically controlled automatic transaxle
(ECAT). This transaxle is similar to the FA4AEL-K transaxle used in the 2000 Sephia and
Spectra models. The only main differences are the case dimensions and the gear ratios. This
transaxle provides smooth acceleration and shifting as well as exceptional power, performance
and reliability.

Brakes
1
Brake System Overview
The anti-lock brake system on the 2001 Rio is a 4-sensor, 4-channel system. With this system,
the front wheels are controlled independently and the rear wheels are controlled in tandem
by a select low system (controlling hydraulic pressure on the side in which the slip is first
detected). The main differences to previous Kia ABS systems is the use of drum rear brakes,
the adoption of an Electronic Brake Force Distribution System and 2 System Warning Lamps.
2
Brake System Overview
Electronic brake force distribution (EBD)
The EBD system (Electronic Brake Force Distribution) is a sub-system of the ABS system
controlling the effective adhesion of the rear wheels.
It utilizes the efficiency of highly developed ABS equipment to control the slip of the rear
wheels in the partial braking range. The brake force distribution is optimized and controlled
electronically, thus dispensing with the need for a proportioning valve.
The proportioning valve, because it is a mechanical device, has limitations to achieve an ideal
braking force to the rear wheels. When the vehicle has a light load (driver only), less pressure
is needed to the rear brakes to stop the vehicle without the rear wheels skidding than with a
fully loaded vehicle. A proportioning valve can not distinguish between a fully loaded vehicle
and a lightly loaded vehicle.
EBD (controlled by the ABS control module), calculates the slip ratio of all 4 wheels and
controls the brake pressure to the rear wheels. If the slip ratio of the rear wheels exceeds
that of the front wheels, the ABS control module will modulate the rear wheel brake pressure
eliminating rear wheel skidding regardless of vehicle load.
If the EBD fails, the EBD warning lamp (parking brake lamp) illuminates.
The ABS/EBD warning lamp control module is located inside the left fender just in front of the
left front wheel.
The EBD system on the 2001 Rio effectively increases the rear brake force when the vehicle is
heavily loaded as with the 5 passengers and a trunk full of luggage.

1
Suspension Overview
Front Suspension
The front suspension system on the 2001 Rio is a typical MacPherson strut layout with single
pivot forged control arms.
The front suspension consists of the following:
A transverse front tension rod that limits sway and doubles as a trailing arm on each side to
maintain control arm alignment.
The control arms include integral ball joints which allow steering and ride travel of the wheels.
The wheels are mounted on steering knuckle forgings, clamped to the control arm ball joints
and bolted to the strut lower ends.
The upper ends of the struts are seated in towers in the engine compartment. Rubber
bushings at the control arm and tension rod mounting points cushion road shocks.
2
Suspension Overview
Rear Suspension
The rear suspension system is the torsion beam axle type separated with spring and damper.
The rear suspension system works as follows:
Suspension action is semi-independent, with the wheels carried on trailing arms, rigidly
connected to each other by a torsion beam.
The beam provides positive control of trailing arm alignment, yet flexes in torsion to permit
limited independent wheel action, and is welded with the stabilizer bar at the beam to prevent
it from rolling.
For isolation of road vibration, heavy rubber bushings are installed at the torsion beam/trailing
arm body brackets, and rubber insulators cushion the spring seats in the strut towers.
3
Steering Overview
Manual Steering
The 2001 Rio comes standard with manual rack and pinion steering. However, power rack
and pinion steering is an option. The power assisted steering is proportional and consists of
the rack and pinion steering gear, power steering pump, fluid reservoir and interconnecting
lines. Both systems are sealed from water and dirt contamination and utilize rubber insulating
mounts at both ends to minimize vibration and road shocks.
