TEACHING AND ASSESSMENT OF LITERATURE STUDIES (SUBJECT)

Why Teaching Literature Is Important ?

Here are some reasons why teaching literature is important . Literature offers the reader
an opportunity to experience the lives of people from different backgrounds, different
socioeconomic classes, be mindsets, ages and time periods. This allows the reader a chance
to see and consider view points that he/she might otherwise never encounter.

When we realize that life experiences and diversity shapes people in different ways, it
improves our thinking and steers us further away from viewing the world from a very narrow
vantage point. This improves our critical thinking skills, helps to develop tolerance for others,
and broadens our sense of the possibilities that the world has to offer.

Literature can educate us about a specific time in history, and allows us to experience
the differences and similarities that time gives us. We can better understand how society was
impacted by historical events and historical people. We see how people from a certain time
dressed, how they thought, how they were shaped by our history. Literature will often supply
us with criticisms of history, criticisms of a particular society or government. We can compare
this with other historical accounts, and we can measure the information in the literature against
philosophical essays, accounts from various academic sources, and those of other writers of
literature.

Literature serves many purposes, and it helps to explain how people remain consistent
over time and the ways in which they change. We see the way language is used by various
socities and time periods, and we see whether their life experience has taught them to make
open criticisms or whether they must veil their criticism with use of fiction, analogy, symbolism,
overtone, and other literary devices. There is a wealth of information and artistic value that
literature provides us, and it is a gift that we have such a vast collection available to us in this
day and age.
