4 SECTION 4 GENERAL REQUIRMENTS FOR AMBO

4.1 General
The Ambo Water Supply and Sanitation Project involve the construction of new intake,
raw water rising main, treatment plant, treated water rising main and storage facilities,
the reinforcing and extending of the existing distribution system, and constructing a
generator house, guard house at the intake and treatment sites.
The scheme has been divided into three contracts:
 A contract for constructing all pipelines, reservoirs, break pressure tanks, civil
structures of treatment unit trains and building structures (by others and hereinafter
referred to as the "Civil Contract");
 A contract for the supply of pipes, fittings, specials, valves, jointing material and
tackle for use by the Civil contractor (by others and hereinafter referred to as the
"Supplier"), and
 A contract for the, supply erection and commissioning of pumping plant,
generators, treatment plant and associated equipment (this contract)

4.2 Location of the Works

The town of Ambo is located to the west of Addis Ababa at latitude 08 059' N and
longitude 37051' E. It is situated in Oromia Region at a road distance of 115 km from
Addis Ababa. The town lies on the watershed of Huluka River.
The approximate locations of the Works are indicated on the Employer's Drawings.

4.3 Scope of the Works

The scope of the works can be summarized as the supply, erection and commissioning
of the following:
 Gravity raw water pipe sets to abstract water from the Huluka River, together with
associated pipe work.
 Plant for the preparation and dosing of aluminum sulphate, lime and calcium
hypochlorite
 Pipe work and valves to upward flow, hopper bottomed clarifiers;
 Pipe work and valves, under drains, filter media and filter control equipment to
rapid gravity filters;
 Surface mounted clear water pumps to transfer water from the clear water tank at
treatment plant to backwash tank at the treatment plant together with associated
station pipe work, surge vessel, compressors and all electrical equipment;
 Standby power generation plant at the treatment site;
 Sundry metalwork at the treatment plant, and intake site
 Associated and ancillary works.

4.4 Other Associated Contracts and Works

The construction of all buildings and civil Managing structures will be carried out under
another contract. The casting in place of all holding down bolts and pipes through
structures, together with grouting in bedplates, etc. will be carried out under another
contract (although setting cast in item of Plant to the correct line and level will be
carried out under this contract).
Where works are being carried out concurrently careful coordination of operation will
be required so that interference can be minimized. The contractor shall be responsible
for liaising with other contractors and shall regulate and rearrange the order of
execution of the works under this contract to achieve the best coordination practicable.
The Contractor programme shall take into consideration all information on coordination

available at the time of its preparation and it shall be flexible enough to allow for
subsequent changes that may become necessary.
The contractor shall be deemed to have allowed for the coordination and programming
of the works with the works of other contractors and for any reasonable interference,
working out of sequence or delay which he may suffer thereby.
The Manager will do all possible to assist in the maintenance of this liaison and
cooperation and the Contractor shall be prepared to assist the progress of the work
generally by carrying out operations in the order required to prevent delays.

4.5 Access to Site

Vehicular access to the Site will be provided by others.

4.6 Programme of the Works

The programme to be submitted by the Contractor shall take cognizance of the
following;
 Drawings showing all civil requirements shall be submitted within -60 days of the
Commencement Date.
 All building structures which are to accommodate pumping plant and associated
equipment will be made available to the Contractor within 15 days of the
commencement Date.
 All other building will be made available to the contractor within 30 days of the
commencement Date.

4.7 Ambient Conditions

4.7.1 Altitude
The altitude of the works range from; 2284masl at the intake site to 2,164masl at the old
treatment plant site located in the town.
4.7.2 Temperatures
The average temperature is between 11.80c and 28.60c.
4.7.3 Rainfall
The town and its surrounding have Mean annual precipitation of 912 mm and the main
rainy months are from June to September. The highest rainfalls occur during the month
of July and August. The mean annual temperature of the town is about 17.6 0c. The
mean monthly temperature in the town is about 7.1 0c, while the mean monthly
minimum temperature is about 26.10c.
4.7.4 Huluka River Flow Data

The 1 in 10 year, minimum flow recorded is 131 l/sec which is considered as the
draught flow. The maximum amount abstracted from the river is less than 50% of the
flow. Thus no additional source has been required.

4.7.5 Derating

All items of plant at the treatment works site shall be derated for an altitude of 1,800 m
a MSL and a maximum ambient temperature of 350C.

4.9 Tools and Workshop Equipment

4.9.1 General

The workshop at Ambo shall be provided with comprehensive tools kits to permit
routine repairs and maintenance of the equipment. The tools shall be supplied in
lockable steel boxes and cabinets. These tools shall be supplied in addition to the
special tools referred to in Section. 1.20

4.9.4 Pipe Threading Equipment

A manual pipe thread cutting machine shall be supplied complete with pipe vice
and stand and a boxes set of 15-80 mm BSPT dies.
4.9.5 Welding Equipment

The following welding equipment shall be supplied:

ONE Mains powered arc welding unit, 150A
ONE Diesel driven arc welding unit, 150A
TWO Sets welding tackle and clamps
TEN Boxes of electrodes for carbon and carbon manganese steel

4.9.6 Electrical Test Equipment

The following shall be supplied complete with test lead and leather carrying cases,
locked in a steel cabinet;
ONE Multimeter tester, AC current 100 mA- 10A full scale deflection in four
ranges, DC current 50mA-10A fsd in seven ranges, AC voltage 2.5 kV fsd
in five ranges, DC voltage 2.5 V - 1000 V fsd in five ranges.
ONE battery powered clamp meter, AC current to 300 A, AC voltage to 60V,
resistance to 10k
ONE Insulation tester, hand crank type, capable of testing at 500 V and 1000 V.
SIX Panel keys
Note: All electrical test equipment are digital.
4.9.7 Work Bench

One wooden mechanic's workbench shall be supplied, complete with soft faced
vice.

4.9.8 Laboratory Equipment

The following laboratory equipment shall be supplied.
ONE Hand held, battery powered pH meter
ONE Hand held, battery powered colorimeter
ONE Spectrophotometer,
ONE Chlorine comparator,
ONE Turbidity meter
TWO Sets of jar test apparatus
ONE Set laboratory glassware, comprising beakers, flasks, pipettes, burettes,
reagent bottles culture dishes, etc
ONE Water bath with thermostat
ONE Drying oven
ONE Refrigerator – general purpose 140 to 160 liter
ONE Autoclave
ONE Incubator
TWO Membrane filtration kits

The laboratory equipment shall be provided with sufficient reagents, culture media,
filters, spare batteries, bulbs and other consumables for two years operation.
