Question: During a nuclear power plant accident 100 curies/sec of Xenon-133 was
released for about an hour. Compute the ground level concentrations at 1000 m, 5000
m, 10000 m, and 2000 m for an effective source height of 50m. The atmospheric stability
during the accident period was D and the average wind speed at 10 m was recorded at 6
m/s. Use the following expressions for computing sy and sz.

 sy  = 0.14 x0.85

  sz = 0.73 x0.55 ,

where x is the downwind distance.

Solution:

1) Deacon power law for calculating wind speed at stack height

u = u1 * (z/z1)p

Where,

u = desired but unknown wind speed,  (us)

u1 = wind speed at known height, (u10)

z = height where wind speed is unknown, hs

z1 = height where wind speed is known, 10m

p = exponent from table 3-3 in the text = 0.15

Therefore, u =  u1 * (z/z1)p  = 6 * (50/10)0.15  = 7.6m/sec

2) Calculate Concentration C

Calculate dispersion co-efficients

 sy  = 0.14 x0.85

  sz = 0.73 x0.55 ,

Concentration, C for location (x, y, z) = (x, 0, 0)

simplify for C(x,0,0) and add equations for coefficient of dispersion

Question: A stack emitting 80 g/s of NO has an effective stack height of 100 m. The
windspeed is 4 m/s at 10m, and it is a clear summer day with the sun nearly overhead.
Estimate the ground level NO concentration
a) Directly downwind at a distance of 2km. (2 marks)
b) At the point downwind where NO is a maximum. (2 marks)
c) At a point located 2km downwind and 0.1 km off the downwind axis. (2 marks)
Solution: H= 100 m, uH= 4m/s, ua= 3 m/s Q= 80g/s, clear summer day so Class B:
