EDU 214-1001 Assignment 1

Attending college to become a teacher has always been one of my dreams growing up. A

lot of people with the same career interests as me can imagine themselves as teachers and the

finish line, but in my own experience the path to the finish line is what I idealize too. I say this

because the road to becoming a teacher is such an amazing experience with all of the special

courses being taken and put together to create a well prepared educator. The main reason why

becoming a teacher has been on my to-do list is thanks to my childhood. My fourth grade

teacher, Ms.Gastelo, created a once in a life-time experience that sparked a light in my eyes and a

vision to do the same thing for other students.

I admit, not every teacher that I’ve had in the past has been pretty successful in doing so, but

Ms.Gastelo’s way of promoting a fun process with education including reading and writing, will

always set this experience to the side. Ms.Gastelo paid attention to each student lacking in the

subject and would constantly work one-on-one with students until each subject was understood.

This amazing teacher learned the different types of learning techniques each student worked

better with and she would provide different techniques when teaching new subjects. I always had

a difficult time with the math subject, but Ms.Gastelo quickly found out I would grasp onto

things quicker if the activities were hands-on. Since then, Ms.Gastelo had all sorts of hands-on

activities and rewards that were given with my progression.

As a future educator, I bring patience, compassion, energy, and open mindedness to the table. I

bring the patience a lot of the current teachers have run out of. I understand we are living in a

pandemic where regulations have changed and where new teaching techniques have been set in
place for the safety of the children and educators. I bring compassion because the last thing an

educator wants to do is make their student’s bored out of their educational ways. Having

compassion when a student accidentally forgets their homework or when a student doesn’t feel at

their very best. Having compassion means to give the student’s a break from time to time. I

understand these children are our future, but they deserve to be treated like human beings with

tons of respect and patience.

I bring my whole provided energy to the table to make learning fun and to find different ways of

getting a subject across the room. Learning the different types of learning techniques from each

of my students will be something I will be grasping from Ms.Gastelo’s way of educating. Being

aware that this helped me out alot, I am more than happy to continue the legacy. Last but not

least, I bring a clear mind prepared for open-minded ideas. We are in a whole new world where

children are becoming more advanced at an earlier stage. A world where you will see

unimaginable things that are the new trend. You will see children less afraid to speak their minds.

I am eager to jump right into this, with an open mind welcoming every child I educate and to

offer an environment where each and every one of my student’s feel safe regardless of their

identity, ethnicity, religion, economic background, and much, much, more.

The concerns I have going into this choice of career are relatively small. The main concern I

have is working with parents who are not interested in a child’s learning progression. This is a

common issue in which I believe most teachers struggle with. When a student is ranked below

average academically, the first step I would take as an educator is to investigate where the issue

has started and what I can do to get the student to succeed academically. The issue with this is

that I may have students who don’t have the necessary resources at home to promote successful

academics. There may be voluntary or sometimes involuntary reasoning behind this. In most
cases, parents work long hours and barely have enough time to work on homework with their

children. There may also be children who don’t have any type of reliable parental assistance. It is

my responsibility as an educator to figure out what can be done in case per case scenarios which

also brings in compassion and patience.

In conclusion, choosing the career path to become a teacher comes with a load of responsibilities

in and out of the work area. Hope is the biggest key. Hope for the best outcome and hope for the

best future for all of the children I will be educating in the near future.
