Global Citizen Essay

Omtesh Das Om

Being a global citizen is an important part to the world and in everyone’s life. Global
citizenship means to make our society a better place to live in, where all people communicate
with each other with their philosophy and sense, and have civil rights and responsibilities. ASGL
is a part of the society where all the students get a meaningful experience as they learn how to
communicate with other people with different cultures, and communities. It prepares us to face
the challenges, the obstacles and how to fight against all the odds in the real world. A global
citizen should be a “Risk-Taker” to have the ability to take responsibility for their actions and its
consequences.

The experience we got from this environment of ASGL has given us courage, confidence, and
taught us to live a positive life with an open mentality. It’s important to be a global citizen
because it helps us to understand the world and the people from their perspective, and also
helps to collaborate with different people from different cultures. ASGL taught us youths that a
global citizen should be “Principled” and “Open-Minded” as we can expect respect if only we
give respect, and how meeting and talking to new people can be helpful to us.

In my belief, a true global citizen is a person who lives based on his/her own
perspective. And I also believe that a person should understand the world from a different
perspective, with their own opinions. I have always tried to admire a person really close to me,
and that’s none other than my elder brother. I used to hate my brother when I was little, but
inside, I wanted to be like him. Especially because he has a passion for music, and how he acts
with other people. He has always been there for me, and he taught me the same too. I ask him
a lot of questions related to his career, which helps me to set a goal too. And eventually, we end
up helping each other, and I believe that’s how a good citizen should act. “Communicators” have
played a role here since communicating with others helps to gain confidence in ourselves. And
with communications, I’m also an “Inquirer” as I am eager to view not just from mine, but others
perspectives as well, because I have been taught by my parents to never judge a book by it’s
cover.

Most importantly I learned to be a person who wants to follow his dream and someone
who is ready to face challenges. My brother's advice on life helped me to become more
confident and have more faith in myself. I believe life should be “Balanced” as it requires the
importance of intellectual, physical and emotional balance in ourselves, which eventually would
help
