Global Citizen Essay

During my time at ASGL, it has taught me the importance of the ability to be able to
understand and use the IB Learner Profiles. ASGL has taught me to be caring, whether that is
showing respect towards my classmates and teachers, being compassionate in my Leadership
class or having empathy towards staff. The mission of our school is to shape us into better
leaders, to prepare us for the real world by being someone who can make a positive difference in
their environment. ASGL’s vision was to help us branch out to be better global citizens so we can
be able to be prepared in our future lives. Which is why ASGL has taught me the importance of
being a risk-taker, because without a push, I wouldn’t have been able to have gone this far.
They have taught me to take the first step, to be courageous so I can be able to accomplish my
goal and to gain experience from that.

I believe being a global citizen is being able to grow from past experiences and to take
that prior knowledge to create something better that will enable you to give back to your
community to try to make it better. A person I believe is a global citizen is Taylor Swift. She
always uses her platform for any form of awareness. She is someone I believe to be
open-minded, always giving back to her community, always supporting numerous charities
donating every year, such as for the flood victims of Louisiana in 2016 and donating all her
profit from her Wildest Dreams video to a non-profit organization who preserved the national
parklands in Africa. I believe that she is someone to be principled, one with a strong sense of
justice and fairness, using her name to promote awareness for sexual assault, using her platform
in 2015 when she countersued Denver Radio Host for SA for a single $1 in hopes of helping
those whos voices havent been heard. This is why I believe Taylor Swift to be a global citizen
because she is always looking out for the well being of others and using her platform any way
possible to make a difference.

Being able to understand the meaning behind what being a Global Citizen means has
taken me some time, but ASGL has helped me learn throughout my years. Having the IB Learner
profile as a guidance has helped me be reflective, it taught me to be mindful with my learning
experiences. I realized that I was able to become more involved after coming back from online
learning, I made new friends, I joined clubs but mostly I know that I tried new things that can
help me develop as a global learner. ASGL taught me that it’s okay to step out of your comfort
zone, as introverted person myself, I was surprised knowing that I was able to join Leadership,
something that involved putting yourself out there and having to communicate with others,
making the first step of being a risk-taker. Leadership has taught me to be a good leader, I
became more aware of how I can be able to help other students, whether that was being able to
leave fun bulletin boards for them to see or creating a fun event for them to enjoy. All these
experiences that ASGL was willing to provide for me, I was able to branch out and use those
experiences to help me in the future.
I believe that as a person I have become more open-minded with my surroundings.
ASGL has taught me to be open to varieties of ideas and experiences that can help me mature in
my future and help me be a better global citizen in my daily life. Knowing that I applied to
universities undecided but still wanting to major in something creative I want to be able to use
Inquirers in the future. I think it can help me develop my curiosity to try new things and expand
my learning skills that can possibly help me decide what I truly want to major in the future. I
want to be able to combine both open-minded and inquirers in the future because it can enable
me to learn through my curiosity while also being aware of the differences we have as a society
that can help me become mentally strong.

Being globally competent is essential to students to be able to become more balanced in

our daily lives. It will help our generation to be able to be more aware towards the well-brings of
not just yourself but others too. I believe it's important to know that being globally competent is
wanting to take the first step towards wanting to make a difference. It will help young minds like
ours develop and prepare us to be more engaged in the world, as long as we are willing to be
efficient. ASGL has helped me understand that being globally competent is to be courageous and
take initiative that will help me use the IB’s in my daily life and can continue to help me
throughout my college years.
