Ability to Absorb
Water
Lesson Vocabulary

Capillarity It is the ability of liquid to pass through

narrow spaces.

It is the ability of a material to absorb or

Porosity
hold liquid or moisture to certain extent.

Absorbent/ Materials that can absorb water or

Porous liquid.

Non-absorbent/ Materials that cannot absorb

Non-porous water or liquid.
SCIENCE KNOWLEDGE # 1

MATERIALS THAT ABSORB WATER

To take in something, such as liquid

Absorb (like water) in a normal or slow way.
cotton balls tissue paper face towel

rug sponge
Absorbent Materials or
Porous Materials

They are normally seen in objects

with a lot of holes that allow liquid to
get inside the materials and occupy
the spaces in it through capillarity.
Non-Absorbent/Non-porous Materials
They are those materials that
do not let the air, liquid or gas
to pass through.
Absorbent Non-Absorbent/
Materials or Non-porous
Porous Materials Materials
Activity 1: List the ABSORBENT/POROUS and the NON-ABSORBENT/ NON-POROUS
on the column that they belong.

2. rug 2. Styrofoam

3. tissue paper 3. plastic bag

4. sponge 4. plastic wrapper

5. cotton balls 5. plastic cover

Ability to
Float
and Sink
SCIENCE KNOWLEDGE # 2
MATERIALS THAT FLOAT AND SINK
Float To stay on top of the water.
Examples:
Plastic cover Pencil Styrofoam

Boat made Rubber Plastic balls

of wood toy duck

Sink To fall to the bottom of the water.

Examples:
Metal spoon Marble
Stone Coin
It is the amount of matter present in a
DENSITY
given volume of substance.

It is also related to the floating

and sinking of materials.

Less dense materials will float over that

are denser.

It is because oil is lighter than water;

therefore, oil stays on top of the water. The
FLOATING and SINKING of an object in a
liquid depends on the DENSITY of both the
object and the liquid.
Activity 2: List the materials that can FLOAT and the materials that SINK on the
column that they belong.

MATERIALS
THAT
UNDERGO
DECAY
Lesson Vocabulary

It refers to materials that have the

Biodegradable
ability to decay.

It refers to materials that do not

Non- decay or will take a long of time to
biodegradable decompose with the help of
Mother Nature.

Decomposition It means decaying or rotting.

SCIENCE KNOWLEDGE # 3
MATERIALS THAT UNDERGO DECAY

Decay To slowly and gradually be destroyed or

damaged into bits or smaller pieces in the
presence or accompanied with water, air
and soil.
EXAMPLES:
fruits vegetables

left over foods plants and dead animals

Non-
Materials that do not decay over
decaying long period of time.
materials

EXAMPLES:
Styrofoam Glass

Aluminum Plastic
Activity 3: List the materials that are DECAYING and the materials that will
NON-DECAYING on the column that they belong.
Aluminum foil broken glass wood Styrofoam leaves
dead plants dead Broken plastic paper Broken
animals chair eyeglasses
