“Photoshop is an art, and you can do a lot with it. Change the atmosphere through different
lighting and make the pictures look more interesting.”

What are Layers in Photoshop?

Using Layers in Photoshop allow you to add new elements to an image
without altering the original image. With Layers, you can place text, additional
images, shapes and even vector graphics into your Photoshop document while
maintaining the ability to move, delete or adjust those elements individually without
affecting one another.
Using Layers is a good policy whenever you need to modify an existing image; by
working in Layers, you can maintain the integrity of your original image until you’re
satisfied with your changes.
Many creative professionals keep a layered version of their Photoshop image that
they can return to and edit later, as well as a flattened version of the modified image
to use on ecommerce sites.

How do Layers work in Photoshop?

Layers act like sheets of transparent film placed on top of one another.
Objects on the top Layer will appear on top of objects on lower Layers. If you apply
a solid color to a Layer, that color will block out any objects on Layers beneath it.
Layers are accessed, modified, created and deleted through the Layers panel in
Photoshop.Layers provide you with an easy way to make changes to a project,
because each element of you project is self-contained and very editable. This
means that as long as you keep layers in your document, your text can be moved
and changed, your adjustments can be reverted back, duplicated or moved, and if
you use the Layers panel correctly, even changes, such as cloning healing, are easy
to edit and change.

Expected Skills : At the end of this lesson, you should be able to :

 organize artwork on layers;
 create, view, hide and select layers;
 rearrange layers to change the stacking order of artwork;
 apply blending modes to layers;
 resize and rotate layers;
 apply a gradient to a layer;
 apply filter to a layer; and
 add text and layer effect to a layer.

THE LAYERS PANEL
In the default workspace, the
Layers panel sits on the right-hand
side of the Photoshop window.
Click on the word Layers to
access it.
If you can’t find the Layers panel
when you open Photoshop, you
can easily access it by clicking on
the Window drop-down menu at
the top of the application window
and selecting Layers.
When Layers is checked, the
panel will pop up your screen.

RENAMING LAYERS
Make your layers organized by renaming them so you can keep track of what
the layer thumbnail contains. When renaming layer in the Layers panel, double-click
the layer’s name to rename it. Then, to apply the new name, without pressing the
Enter/Return key simply tap the Tab to move the layer below. This makes it much
faster to rename a larger number of layers.

The Text is a type layer, as indicated by the T in the layer thumbnail. In order
to make changes to the layer, you must select it by clicking the thumbnail and
highlighting it in the Layers panel. Then, you can use the tools or Layers menu
options to make changes.

Layer Visibility is the eye icon next to the layers which indicates that the
layers are visible. Click the eye next to a layer and the visibility is turned off for the
layer as if it never existed. It can’t be seen or changed until you turn the visibility
back on.

Note : The lock icon indicates that the layer is protected.

ADDING A NEW LAYER
There are several ways to create a new Layer in Photoshop. The quickest
method is to type SHIFT+CTRL+N (SHIFT+COMMAND+N on a Mac) to
automatically create a new Layer on top of any existing Layers in your document.
You can also create a new Layer by clicking on the Layers panel menu (which looks
like four horizontal lines on the right-hand side of the panel) and selecting New
Layer.

A dialog box will pop up with options for the new Layer you’re about to create. You
can change each of these options afterwards, so it’s fine to leave everything as is
and click OK.

Once you’ve created a new Layer, you can add an object to it or draw in it without
affecting the background.

ADDING ANOTHER DOCUMENT AS A NEW LAYER

If you are combining two or more documents into one image, either by
merging them or by creating a photo collage, adding additional documents as new
layers to your original document is easy. You can do this by:

Using The Place Command

Choose File > Place to open the Place dialog box with the original document
open. Browse to locate the file that you want to add as an additional layer, and open
it. The file appears in your original document as a new layer. You have the option of
re-sizing or rotating it before accepting the placement.

A W A R E N E S S. C O M M I T M E N T. E X C E L L E N C E. SERVICE
Choose File > Place Embedded to import files as Smart Objects into an open
Photoshop document.

Choose File > Place Linked you can create Linked Smart Objects. The contents of
Linked Smart Objects are updated when the source image file changes. Linked
Smart Objects are particularly useful for teams or in cases where assets must be
reused across designs.

Copying and Pasting

Copy and paste your documents into one another as additional layers. Open
the document with which you want to make a second layer. Press Ctrl+A
(Command+A) on a Mac to select all. Press Ctrl+C (Command+C) on a Mac to
copy your selection. Open the document into which you want to paste the selection.
Press Ctrl+V (Command+V) for Mac to paste the previous document into the new
one. This method has disadvantage from the previous two placement methods
because your new layer is imported into your document at its original size. In order
to resize it, you need to choose Edit > Free transform.

Moving Layers
Between documents. Choose Window > Arrange > Float in Window to float
your selected document in a separate window. Click the image layer of the
document that you want to move, and drag it to the original document. This option
provides the most benefits if you want to move more that one layer, because all the
selected layers can be moved at the same time. This layers are placed at their
original size.

APPLYING A LAYER STYLE

You can enhance a layer by adding a shadow, stroke, satin sheen, or other
special effects from a collection of automated and editable layers styles. These
styles n are easy to apply, and they link directly to the layer that you specify.
Layer styles are special effects that can be quickly and easily applied to
individual layers in Photoshop to drastically change the appearance of something in
very little time. Layers styles are nondestructive, so you can edit or remove the at
any time. You can apply a copy of a layer style to a different layer by dragging the
effect onto the destination layer, or right-click on a layer and choose Copy Style
from the pop-up menu and click on the layer that you wish to copy the style into by
right-clicking on the layer and choosing Paste Style.

BLEND MODES
Working with Blend Modes is almost always an experimental process.
Because it’s nearly impossible to predict the results, you always seem to end up
experimenting with different modes and fill opacities until you get the results you’re
looking for.
The Opacity slider inn the Layers panel allows you to blend the active layer
with the layers below by making the active layer translucent, which in turn allows
the layers below to show through. The Blend Modes found in Photoshop allow the
same process to take place, but by using different mathematical calculations for
each Blend Mode.
Any changes made using Blend Modes are parametric, i.e., the changes are
nondestructive. You can always revisit your Blend Mode settings and readjust them
as needed without damaging the pixels in your original image.

Blending Mode descriptions

Choose from the Mode pop-up menu in the options bar.

 Normal - edits or paints each pixel to make it the result color.

 Dissolve - edits or paint each pixels to make it the result color, but only as a
random replacement of the pixel with blend or base colors.
 Darken - looks at the color information in each channel and selects the base or
blend color - whichever is darker -- as the result color.
 Multiply - looks at the color information in each channel and multiplies the base
color by blend color.
 Color Burn - looks at the color information in each channel and darkens the
base color to reflect the blend color by increasing the contrast between the two.
 Linear Burn - looks at the color information in each channel and darkens the
base color to reflect the blend color by decreasing the brightness.
 Lighten - looks at the color information in each channel and selects the base or
blend color - whichever is lighter - as the result color.
 Screen - looks at each channel’s color information and multiplies the inverse of
the blend and base colors.
 Color Dodge - looks at the color information in each channel and brightens the
base color to reflect the blend color by decreasing contrast between the two.
 Linear Dodge (Add) - looks at the color information I n each channel and
brightens the base color to reflect the blend color by increasing the brightness.

 Pin Light - replaces the colors, depending on the blend color.
 Hard Mix - adds the red, green and blue channel values of the blend color to the
RGB values of the base color.
 Difference - looks at the color information in each channel and subtracts either
the blend color from the base color or the base from the blend color, depending
on which has the greater brightness value.
 Exclusion - creates an effect similar but lower in contrast to the Difference Mode
 Divide - looks at the color information in each channel and divides the blend
color from the base color.
