Project EL AR: Enhance Learning thru Adequate Resources
GUIDE FOR THE LEARNER, PARENTS,
GUARDIANS AND LEARNING FACILITATOR

To You, Learner:

Welcome to Computer Science 2 Self-Learning Module (SLM) on Adobe Photoshop Multi

Layers. This module was made to give you with fun and meaningful time for guided and inde-
pendent learning at your convenience. You will be able to process the contents of this Module
while being an active learner.

To You, Parent/s, Guardian/s and Learning Facilitator/s:

This Module was collaboratively developed and reviewed by the teachers, school heads
and supervisors of DepEd Division of Cabanatuan City to assist you in helping the learners meet
the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum while overcoming their different constraints in school-
ing. As a facilitator, you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this module. You also
need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them to manage their own learning.
Furthermore, you are expected to encourage and assist the learners as they do the tasks includ-
ed in the module.

This module is about the basic concepts and underlying principles of Photo Editing specifi-
cally using the Adobe Photoshop. This module is designed to focus exploring photo editing. It is
enrich with different activities that will assess your level in terms of skills and knowledge, that you
are expected to demonstrate after completing this learning materials. It is divided into different
sections - What Do You Know, What You Need to Know and What Did You Learn. Go over with
the suggested tasks and accomplish them to practice developing a sustainable program, priori-
tizing needs and building vision.

2
OBJECTIVES

At the end of the lesson, the learners must be able to;

1. Understand basics of layers in adobe photoshop
2. Know how to manipulate layers in adobe photoshop

COMPETENCY

WHAT DO YOU ALREADY KNOW?

Direction: Write TRUE if the statement is correct, write FALSE if not. Write
your answer in a separate sheet of paper.

________ 1. The basics of layers have not changed at all over the years, so even though you’ll
be using Photoshop CS6 here, everything is fully compatible with Photoshop CC as
well as earlier versions of Photoshop.

________ 2. You can add layers, delete layers, name and rename layers, group them, move
them, mask them, blend them together, add effects to layers, change their opaci-
ty, and more.

transparent.

as you click other layers.

4
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Understanding Layers

Layers are, without a doubt, the single most important aspect of Photoshop. Nothing worth
doing in Photoshop can, or at least should, be done without layers. They're so important that
they have their own Layers panel as well as their own Layer category in Photoshop's Menu Bar
along the top of the screen. You can add layers, delete layers, name and rename layers, group
them, move them, mask them, blend them together, add effects to layers, change their opaci-
ty, and more!

Learn what layers are and why they are so useful.

 Layers contain the images, text, or objects that make up a layered file. They let you move,
edit, and work with content on one layer without affecting content on other layers.

 Layers are arranged in a stack in the Layers panel, which is usually located in the bottom
right of the work area. If the Layers panel is not visible, choose Window > Layers.

 In the Layers panel, click the eye icon to the left of a layer to hide its content.
Click again in the same spot to reveal the content. This is a useful way to remind your-
self what’s on a particular layer.

 A layer must be selected in order to make changes to it. In the Layers panel, click once to
the right of a layer name to select that layer. To add more layers to your selection, hold
Control (Windows) or Command (macOS) as you click other layers.

Learn Layer Basics

Change layer order, create a new layer, change layer opacity, and delete a layer.

 Drag a layer up or down in the Layers panel to change the order of layered objects in the
image.

 Click the Create a New Layer icon at the bottom of the layers panel to make a new layer.
This layer is transparent until something is added to it.

 To name a layer, double-click the current layer name. Type a new name for the layer. Press
Enter (Windows) or Return (macOS).

 To change a layer’s opacity, select a layer in the Layers panel and drag the Opacity slider
located near the top of the Layers panel to make the layer more or less transparent.

 To delete a layer, select a layer in the Layers panel and press Backspace (Windows) or De-
lete (macOS).

5
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Resize a Layer
Change the size of the content of selected layers.
 In the Layers panel, select one or more layers that contain images or objects you want to
resize.
 Choose Edit > Free Transform. A transform border appears around all the content on the
selected layers. Hold the Shift key to avoid distorting the content, and drag the corners or
edges until it is the desired size. Drag inside the transform border to move the content
around the image. Drag outside the transform border to rotate the content.
 Click the check mark in the options bar or press Enter (Windows) or Return (macOS) to final-
ize the change.

Add Images to a Layered Design

Bring more images into a design, each image on its own layer.
1. Choose File > Place Embedded, navigate to an image file in File Explorer (Windows) or
Finder (macOS), and click Place.
2. Hold the Shift key to avoid distorting the image, and drag the corners of the image bor-
der to resize the added image.

3. Drag inside the border to position the added image where you want it.

4. Click the check mark in the options bar to finalize the placement. This automatically cre-
ates a new layer containing the added image.

The Layers Panel

If there's something we need to do in Photoshop that has something to do with layers, the
Layers panel is where we do it. We use the Layers panel to create new layers, delete existing lay-
ers, rename layers, move layers around, turn layers on and off in the document, add layer masks
and layer effects.... the list goes on. And it's all done from within the Layers panel. The Layers pan-
el is showing us that we currently have one layer in our document—the default Background lay-
er.

When we initially added our two shapes to the document, they were both added to the
Background layer, and that's why there was no way to move them independently of each other.
The shapes and the white background were all stuck together on a flat image. This way of work-
ing in Photoshop, where everything is added to a single layer, is known in technical terms as
"wrong" because when you need to go back and make changes, you run into a
"problem" (another technical term). Let's see what happens if we create the same layout as be-
fore, but this time, we'll place everything on its own layer.

6

your answer in a separate sheet of paper.
