The post was established after the 6th amendment to
the state's constitution (effective 6 June 1965)
abolished the title of Wazir-e-Azam, also called Prime
Minister of Jammu and Kashmir. Subsequently, the
ruling prime minister, Ghulam Mohammed Sadiq, was
sworn in as the first Chief Minister of Jammu and
Kashmir.

Akbar visited the valley only thrice; his son Jahangir 13 times. It
was Jahangir who built the beautiful Shalimar gardens on the
