SIZES and TYPES of SIDE DRAINS

2018 CMGP

● Size and type should be based on pavement surface runoff and catchment area
● Design flood frequency is 5 yrs. and flood frequency is 10 yrs
TYPES of SIDE DRAINS

2018 CMGP EARTH DITCH

LINED CANAL
EARTH DITCH
- maximum gradient of 5%
2018 CMGP
- Minimum depth of 0.6 m below the roadway

- For flat bottomed profile, should ideally be wide

and shallow with minimum depth of 0.3m below
the roadway

- for flat bottomed ditches, the side slope and

back slope should have less than 1:4 ratio but
not less than 1:2 ratio
2018 CMGP

TURNOUTS are extensions of ditches that redirect water into the vegetated buffers and
disperse runoff before it can cause erosion.
LINED SIDE DRAINS

2018 CMGP
Lining of side drains with structure
should only be used where the
turbulent or high velocity flow in
excess of 1m/second cannot be
reduced or controlled by other
means.

SURVEY AND INVESTIGATIONS

Should be provided on areas with:

- High risk of soil slope failure
- High water table
- Many records of slope failure
SLOPE PROTECTION DESIGN PROCEDURES

SLOPE STABILITY ANALYSIS

 is a static or dynamic, analytical or empirical method to evaluate

the stability of earth and rock-fill dams, embankments,
excavated slopes, and natural slopes in soil and rock.
SLOPE PROTECTION DESIGN PROCEDURES

SCOUR ANALYSIS
Outlet protection may be required where:

 The outlet velocity exceeds the scour velocity of the bed or bank
material
 The outlet channel and banks are actively eroding
 Protection requirements may range from a riprap apron to stilling
basins and concrete structures
