Andhra and nutmeg grown in Kerala may have given hot
and tangy flavours to the meat and cola. Or, take the
perfume that you spray on your body. It could be carrying

Extraction of oils and oleoresins was first developed in Germany and was commercialised in the early
twentieth century. One of the leading companies at present, Kancor Ingredients was the first to start
operation in India in 1969 as Bombay Oil Industries when it began manufacturing oleoresin of black pepper.
Synthite followed three years later while Plant Lipids, the secondbiggest player, went on stream in 1979.

liberalisation in the early nineties that opened up the possibilities for these firms through exportpromoting
measures such as dutyfree import against exports and paved the way for the supremacy of Indian
oleoresins. The biggest consumers of oleoresins have been the processed food sector in developed
countries, where the purchasing power is high. Its customers include flavour and fragrances makers,
seasoning companies, spice blenders, meat processors and organic retail chains in cosmetics and
fragrances.
