A Study on drug addiction among youngsters at Coimbatore District.

ABSTRACT :

Drug addiction, also called substance dependence or dependence syndrome, is a

condition where a person feels a strong need to take a drug. Addiction also
involves other behaviours. These include finding it difficult to control the need to
use the drug and feeling the use of the drug to be more important than more
normal things such as family or work. When the person does not use the drug for
an amount of time, they may suffer from withdrawal.

When a person is addicted, they are usually addicted to a class (a specific kind) of
drug. For example: Heroin is a drug that is in the Opiate class. Which means that a
person addicted to Heroin may also be seen to have an addiction to other opiates
such as Morphine.

KEY WORD : drug addiction , opiate class , heroin , morphine.

INTRODUCTION :

Life has given us a huge and noble gift and that is the youth. Biologically youth is a
particular stage of life when an individual is young, and often means the time
between childhood and adulthood (maturity). This age represents “the
appearance, freshness, vigor, spirit, etc., characteristic of one who is
young”.Youth is a lifetime experience that may shape an individual. It creates the
level of dependency, which can be marked in various ways according to different
cultural perspectives. At this phase of life, the youth is always driven by fantasy or
freedom and the power to choose his or her response. But all this must be
cautiously exercised and every step should be planned. It is the best and
appropriate phase to accomplish the dual goals of intelligence and
character.Youth is a critical age of development, a period of uncertainty when
everything is in ferment. A youth personality possesses a mixture of both stages; a
child and an adult. Their emotions change every time. Like he can be selfish at
certain times or turn out to be selfless the very next day.The same person may
also turn out to be rebellious one day.Young people's brains are growing and
developing until they are their mid-20's. This is especially true of the prefrontal
cortex, which is used to make decisions. Taking drugs when young can interfere
with developmental processes occurring in the brain. It can also affect their
decision-making. They may be more likely to do risky things, such as unsafe sex
and dangerous driving. The earlier young people start using drugs, the greater
their chances of continuing to use them and become addicted later in life.Taking
drugs when you are young can contribute to the development of adult health
problems, such as heart disease, high blood pressure, and sleep disorders.

REASON FOR YOUNGER GETTING INTO DRUGS:

In the morden world and in glooming generation and cultural change lots Young
people may do drugs because they want to be accepted by friends or peers who
are doing drugs. Abused drugs can produce feelings of pleasure. Some young
people suffer from depression, anxiety, stress-related disorders, and physical
pain. Some may do drugs to try to get some relief. Young people often want to try
new experiences, especially ones that they think are thrilling or daring.

Which drugs most commonly used by young people?

The drugs that are most commonly used by young people are alcohol, tobacco,
and marijuana, cigatettes, pans etc. Recently, more young people have
started vaping tobacco and marijuana. There is still a lot we don't know about the
dangers of vaping. Some people have unexpectedly gotten very ill or have even
died after vaping. Because of this, young people should stay away from vaping.
