Since 1950 this committee has been knowa as Sectional Committee on Standard- ization of Washers and Machine Rings. Subcommittee 1 on Plain Washers was appointed in May, 1928. A proposed submitted by the subcommittee ia October, 1932, was revised after circulation for land comment. A second revision of the proposed standard was prepared and distributed j May, 1935. The thied and last revision of the proposal was eferced to the sectional com mittee but did not receive the vore necessary for recommending ita appeoval as an American Standaed. From 1937 until 1946 the Subcommittee 1 activity was dormant, owing: in part to industry preoccupation with che war effore and in patt to sectional committee concenteation oon the developrieat of American Standards for lock washers, ~ there being some resistance to the concurrent development of both projects. In 1945 the Subcommittce 1 project was ccactivated and in December ofthat yeat anew roposal for an American Standard was approved at a meeting of the sectional committee ‘subject to confiming approval by letter ballot vote of the sectional committee, As the proposal received an overwhelming vote of approval in the letter ballot canvass, the sec- Homa committee at a mecting in December, 1948, ordered its referral to the sponsor societies, Ie was subsequently approved by the sponsor societies and by the American Standards Association, and officially designated az an American Standard on August 31, 1949. A proposed revision dated ‘American Standards As 1 designation as an American Standaed was given March 30, 1953. ‘Subsequent to publication of the 1953 ieeue certain changes and inclusion of an additional series of washers were proposed. A proposed revision dated February 1956 twas approved by letter ballot vote of the Sectional Committee sponsors and the American Standards Association. Official designation as an American Standard was given on August 5, 1958. Following issuance of the 1958 standard, Subcomaittee 1 continued to refine che specifications for plain washers, Several meetings resulted in adjustment of the tolerances ide and outside diameters to conform with good commercial stamping practices and the application of the same tolerances to both Type A and Type B washers.” Also, to provide better guidance for sees, it was agreed to tabulate the preferred sizes of Type A washers separately. A proposed revision dated November 1963, was circulated for simul taneous letter ballot approval of Subcommittee 1 and the Sectional Committee on Novenber 18, 1963. All dieapprovals sad comments were tesolved by cizculation of suggested dis: ‘positions oa Febniary 12, 1965. The proposal was subsequently approved by the sponsor jons and the American Standards Association and granted formal recogaition as an American Standard on September 20, 1965. foe conraahe.® » 965, o7 Copy bythe Ameren Sockay Of Mechs Enciners Moe son 19081513 2000) ASME BLS.22-) 65 MM 2595532 OOLNG35S 5 B27 Standardization of Washers and Machine Rings R, P. Consumers are requested to consult with-manu- facturers conceming lists of stock production 1.2 Types of Washers 121 Type A. The Type A plain washers ‘were originally developed in a light, medium, heavy, and exten heavy series with proportions thae were related to the dimensions of bolt heads and nuts principally to minimize embedding and to aid torquing. Tt is intended that these series designations should be discontinued and that the ‘washers should be identified by heir sominal crably from the preferred sizes shown in Table TA. Ia the event the desited Type A waster is fot listed in Table 1A, eeference may be made toTeble IB. 1.2.2 Type B. The Type B plain washers are available in a nartow, fegular and wide series ‘ith proportions designed to fulfill the customary purpose of distributing load over larger areas of [ower strength mateuiats, Suitable washer selec tion can be made by referring in Table 2 co che fominal screw of bole size snd selecting the ‘appropriate width series for the application.
