PREFACE

Soil Mechanics is one of the courses in the final year curriculum of Civil Engineering. This is the
second edition of Soil Mechanics Tutorial/Assignment for B.E. 3rdyear students of SILVER
OAK COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING & TECHNOLOGY, AHMEDABAD.
The assignments are intended to serve as booklet which consists of series of important questions
for the course. It covers the questions related to syllabus of Gujarat Technological University.
These tutorials are designed in such a way that when students will start solving applied
construction problems they will not only prepare themselves for final exams to be held by
Gujarat Technological University but will also get a glimpse of application of construction
management problems in civil engineering.

Each Tutorial is carefully designed according to the GTU syllabus and main focus is on applied
problems and questions which are important aid while preparing for examinations.

1. Discuss about stability analysis of Infinite slopes for c-Φ soils..

Assignment No. 2 –Stress Distribution in Soil

1. Derive an expression for the vertical stress at a point due to a point load using Boussineq’s theory.

2. Explain in detail the construction of Newmark’s influence chart. How is it used?

3. Explain vertical stress distribution on a horizontal plane due to point load acting on ground surface.

4. Illustrate the procedure for plotting an isobar of intensity 0.1Φ. Also draw isobar diagram

5. A square footing 2mx2m carries a uniformly distributed load of 314KN/m2find the intensity of vertical
pressure at a depth of 6m below a point 0.5m inside each of the two adjacent sides of footing

6. A raft of size 4mx4m carries a load of 200KN/m2. Determine vertical stress increment at a point 4m
below the centre of the loaded area using Boussinesq theory. Compare the result with that obtained by
equivalent point load method.

7. A circular area on the surface of an elastic soil mass of great extent carries a uniformly distributed load
of 150KN/m2. The radius of the circular area is 5m. Compute the vertical stress at a point 6m below the
centre of the circle using Boussineq’s theory. [63.6KN/m2]

Assignment No. 4 –Shear Strength

1. Derive Moh’s Shear Strength equation using usual notations.


2. Explain different types of triaxial test with respect to drainage conditions
3. Explain the principle of ‘Direct Shear Test’. With a neat sketch give the various
advantages and limitations of this test
4. Give Mohr Coulomb failure envelop for different soils with respective equations
5. Two drained triaxial tests are performed on the material. In the first test the all –
round pressure is 200 KN/m2 and failure occure at an added axial stress of 600
KN/m2 . In the second test all round pressure is 350 Kn/m2 and failure occurs at an
added axial stress of 1050 KN/ m2 . What values of C and Φ correspond to these
results.
6. Compute the shearing strength of soil along a horizontal plane at a depth of 5 m in a deposit
of sand having Φ = 36o , γ= 16.68 KN/m3 , Gs= 2.7. Assume water table at 2.4 m from
ground

Assignment No. 5 – Bearing Capacity of Shallow Foundation

1. Describe Terzaghi’s theory of bearing capacity of foundation soil under strip footing.
What are the assumptions and its limitations?

2. Explain “Types of shear failure of soil” with neat sketches.

3. Describe plate load test with neat sketches.

4. Differentiate between General shear failure and Local shear failure.

5. Explain clearly the effect of ground water table on safe bearing capacity of soil.

6. Define contact pressure. Which factors affect contact pressure distribution? Draw contact
pressure diagram for rigid footing on clay and sand.

7. Compute the safe bearing capacity of square footing 1.5m x1.5m located at a depth of 1m
below ground level in a soil density 18KN/m3, Ø= 30o(Nc=30.14, Nq= 18.4, Nγ= 22.4).
If the water table rises to ground level, what is reduction in SBC? Take FS=3.
8. A footing 3m square carries a gross pressure of 350 KN/m2at a depth 1.2m in sand. A

saturated unit weight of sand is 20Kn/m3and the unit weight above the water table is
17Kn/m3. The shear strength parameters are c=0 and Ø=30o. (For Ø=30o, Nq= 20,
Nγ=20). Determine the factor of safety with respect to shear failure for the following
cases:

→ Water table is 5m below ground level

→ Water table is 1.2m below ground level

9. A strip footing of 2 m width is placed at a depth of 4 m below the ground surface.


Determine the net ultimate bearing capacity using, 1) Terzaghi’s equation, 2) Skempton’s
equation and 3) IS code. The unit weight of soil (clay) is 20 kN/m3 and cohesion c = 10
kN/m2.

1. Discuss various dynamic formulae. What are their limitations?

2. What is negative skin friction? What is its effect on the pile?

3. Write a short note on group action and efficiency of pile group.

4. Explain “pile load test” to determine the bearing resistance of pile.

5. A square pile (3x3=9 piles) are embedded in clayey bed (cu=100 KPa). The c/c spacing

iskept as 3d. The length and diameter of pile are 10m and 0.3m respectively. If

α=0.6,calculate the pile group capacity considering it as friction pile group.

6. A 30cm diameter pile, 15 m long is driven in a deposit of medium dense sand (Ø= 36o,Nγ=

40 Nq=42). The unit weight of sand is 15 KN/m3. What is allowable load with factor of

safety 3.0. Assume lateral earth pressure coefficient =0.6

Concrete Technology is designed for Civil Engineering undergraduates with basic understanding
of the theory and practical of concrete materials. Students will apply the knowledge gained from
theoretical and practical practice. This is the first edition of Concrete Technology Assignment
Workbook for B.E. 2nd year students of SILVER OAK GROUP OF INSTITUTES,
AHMEDABAD.

Type of course: Civil Engineering

Prerequisite: This course requires the student to know about the basic of civil engineering,
fundamentals of chemistry, building materials etc.

Rationale: A civil engineer are supposed to supervise concreting operations involving


proportioning, mixing, transporting, placing, compacting, finishing and curing of concrete.
To perform above functions, it is essential to impart knowledge and skills regarding
ingredients of concrete and their properties; properties of concrete in plastic and hardened
