Step 4: Transform the perfect square trinomial at the left side of the
equation to square of a binomial and simplify the right side of the
equation.
(x + 2)2 = 9
Step 5: Get the square root of both sides of the equation and simplify.
√ 2= √
x+2=±3
Step 6: Solve for the value of x
x+2=3 x + 2 = -3
x=3–2 x= 3–2
x=1 x= 5
Therefore, the roots of the equation are 1 and .
Checking:
for x = 1 for x = 5
x2 + 4x – 5 = 0 x2 + 4x – 5 = 0
(1)2 + 4(1) – 5 = 0 5)2 + 4( 5) – 5 = 0
1+4–5=0 25 – 20 – 5 = 0
0 =0 0=0
Solution:
Step 1: Divide all terms by the coefficient of x2 which is 4.
x2 – 8x + 7 = 0
Step 2: Add to both sides of the equation, then simplify.
x2 – 8x + 7 =0
x2 – 8x =
Step 3: Add blank spaces to both side of the equation.
x2 - 8x + ______ = + ______
4
Step 4: Complete the square on the left side of the equation by adding
√ 2 = √
x-4=±3
5
Step 5: Transform the perfect square trinomial at the left side of the
equation to square of a binomial and simplify the right side of the
equation.
(x – 3)2 = 50
Step 6: Get the square root of both sides of the equation and simplify.
√ 2 = √
x–3= √
Step 7: Solve for the value of x ( √ can be expressed as √ √
√ )
x–3=√ x–3= √
x – 3=√ √ x–3= √ √
x – 3 = 5√ x–3= 5√
x = 3+5√ x = 3 – 5√
Therefore, the roots of the equation are 3+5√ and 3 – 5√

Let Us Study
The quadratic formula can be used to solve all types of quadratic equation.
To use the quadratic formula, the equation should be in general form ax2 +
bx + c = 0. In the equation, ax2 is the quadratic term, bx is the linear term
√
and c is the constant term. The quadratic formula is

Since we can no longer simplify √ and √ , therefore,
the roots of the quadratic equation x – 4x – 6 = 0 are
2 √ and

Keep in mind:
If b is negative, then the
𝑏 that appears in the
formula is positive.
