Synopsis

Coronavirus is a virus that causes infection sinuses, nose, or upper throat. Usually, it is

not dangerous but on December 31, 2019, the World Health Organization (WHO) of unknown

pneumonia in Wuhan, Hubei in China. They started their investigation around January 2020 and

after that, the world changed in a glimpse. The COVID-19 pandemic or also called the

coronavirus pandemic is a virus that is still ongoing until today. It is caused by severe acute

respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Some of the most common symptoms are

cough, dry cough and tiredness, and more.

Pregnant women are more likely at higher risk for a lot of infections because pregnant

women are at higher risk for many infections. After all, pregnancy represses the immune system.

They are at higher risk because pregnant women are Immunocompromised that their decrease in

immune defenses is a normal response to pregnancy. Some doctors are speculating it is through

utero transmission based on elevated levels of certain antibodies and it was proven that utero

transmission indeed. New research findings show that pregnant women with suspected or has

COVID-19 are not likely to experience fever or muscle pain. According to the new research

findings, pregnant women with COVID-19 who have prior medical health conditions (diabetes

or chronic high blood pressure or who are older or overweight) may suffer more likely severe

health complications due to COVID-19. The new research finding also suggests that pregnant

women with COVID-19 are likely to give birth to a premature baby. The data also shows that 1

out 4 babies with mothers who have COVID-19 are admitted to the neonatal unit. So far with the

findings, stillbirth and newborn babies are low in death rates. Healthcare providers should know

that importance and awareness of pregnant women with COVID-19 and their newborn babies

may need specialist care and access to this care. It also important to address the crucial stress of

pregnant women and their babies for a positive pregnancy and childbirth must be ensured.

Insights

From my understanding, the article shows us that pregnant women and their babies are at

risk of COVID-19. The article also has new findings on pregnant women with their babies who

have pre-existing medical conditions and may be obese that are much more likely going to suffer

severely if she has COVID-19. The new research finding is basically about Pregnant women

with COVID-19 are less likely than non-pregnant women with COVID-19 to have symptoms,

but more likely to need intensive care if severely ill. I learned that pregnant women and their

babies with COVID-19 are much more to care for by specialist care because they need to be the

prioritized ones. That we should recognize the feelings of the mother towards the COVID-19

pandemic. The mother should have a positive pregnancy without feeling stressed and anxious

because it could affect the baby in some way to calm down her mental health. I also learned that

pregnant women and recently with COVID-19 were more likely to give birth to a premature

baby. I also learned that 1 out of 4 babies whose mothers were COVID-19 positive were

admitted in the neonatal unit. Stillbirths and newborn death rates are on the low so far.
