Emotional Self
“Humans are understood as
embodied emotional selves for
who thought and emotion are
intertwined” (Burkitt, 2018)
• Embodiment theory
- that we use our own bodily experience and processes to
understand our own emotional experience, and the experiences
of others – has provided a mechanism to help us understand
emotional processing.
- This theory emphasizes the impact of the body on emotional
experience and postulates that emotions are constructed from
multi-modal inputs.
Reed and Moody, 2018
“It is within relations and
communicative interactions with
others to whom we are directed
that the emotional self is
formed”(Burkitt, 2018).
“ Although feelings and emotions are
themselves evaluations that develop through
interactions with others and can become
embodied as dispositions, we also make
evaluations about our feelings and emotions”
(Burkitt, 2018).
“Dealing with our emotions and thoughts more
effectively involves not simply better control or
regulation of emotion but instead developing a self
that can be more in touch with its emotions and
also, through them, with the situations that
compose its life experiences” (Burkitt, 2018).
“Emotional self
arises through
embodied social
interactions”
(Pagis,2012;Burkitt,2018)
