Different persons have different cultural backgrounds especially if they are from

two different countries. In the movie clip, The Joy Luck Club, Rich, while meeting
his fiancée’s parents committed some acts which were not acceptable in the
Chinese Culture. First, he drank his drink in full and then offered a toast while
everyone else had still half of their drinks in their glasses. Second, he got a big
portion of the food instead of just getting a spoonful until everyone had partaken
of the food. He also forced himself to use the chopsticks when in truth he doesn’t
know how to use it and lastly, he criticized the food served by the mother of his
fiancée. His acts were considered rude to the Chinese culture but Rich obviously
was not aware of his rude acts because he has no knowledge of the Chinese
culture.
Rich was oblivious of the tension that developed during the dinner scene
because he has no knowledge of the Chinese culture thus during the dinner, he
committed some acts which were considered rude in the Chinese culture. Rich
was used to doing things in his way being an American but it does not mean that
doing his way is always the right or only way because he has also to consider the
culture of other people. Before going to that dinner, he should have researched
on the Chinese culture during dinner or maybe his fiancée should have briefed
him on what to do and not to do so as not to offend or cause awkwardness during
the dinner hosted by the fiancée’s parents.
