British people love the autumn. Usually they like it more than the summer.

There are many

reasons for this. First of all, most British people don’t enjoy hot, sunny weather. It’s true that
when they see the first rays of sun they rush outside and sunbathe, but many British people
have fair skin, so the result can be bad sunburn. British people also feel embarrassed wearing
sunglasses, which means they spend summer with a headache. British houses are not the best
places to be in hot weather. The rooms are often quite small and most of them have warm
carpets and heavy curtains and don’t usually have shutters on the windows.

The situation outdoors is no better. British people don’t really enjoy

drinking outside in European-style cafes and bars. The Brits prefer pubs and the typical old-
fashioned pub with low ceilings and carpets is not ideal on a summer evening.
Of course British people love their gardens and they often have barbecues at the weekends
when the weather is good. The problem is that British weather is very unpredictable. If after a
beautiful morning and afternoon a British family decides to have a barbecue, it can be a
disaster. Very often the weather changes in the evening – usually just when the barbecue is
ready.

Summer holidays are often disappointing. There are some extremely

beautiful places to visit on the British coast and in the countryside: Brits particularly love
camping and walking holidays, but August can be wet. Imagine two weeks in a tent with
heavy rain and unhappy children. That’s a typical British holiday.
Then autumn arrives! The weather is fresh and cool. The kids go back to school and their
friends. The parents go back to work and their colleagues. Everything is normal again. People
can put on their jumpers and scarves and go for long walks in the beautiful autumn leaves.
Rain is expected, and so no one complains when it happens. Best of all, it makes the perfect
excuse to have a pint of beer in the pub. This is really what the British love best!
