Development of the rural forms is always important agenda of the Government. The
impact of ICT in the development of rural sector has been moderately slow or andante.
The major reasons for this are the poor ICT awareness among working officials, local
language & poor ICT infrastructure. In India, the agriculture is a only sector in which
more than 58% of the population lives in rural area and earns its livelihood by agriculture
and allied means of income. The growing demand for agricultural products, also offers
opportunities for producers to sustain and to improve their livelihoods. Information and
communication technologies plays an important role in postmarking these challenges by
uplifting the livelihoods. ICT offers an opportunity to introduce new activities & new
services into those areas to strength existing services. ICT promises a fundamental change
in all aspects of our lives, including knowledge dissemination, economic and business
practices, education, health, leisure, social interaction, media, political engagement, and
entertainment.
In India, applications of ITC such as Rural e-Seva, Gyan Sanchar, Radio for Rural
Development, E-Chaupal, E-Seva, Dristee, Praja Sks, Bhoomi, E-Mitra, Star, Warana,
Lokmitra, Gyandoot E-Post, Sari, Cybermohalla, Gramdoot, Tarahaat, Dhan, Friends,
Akshaya, Deesha, Setu, and Honeybee are in functioning for rural development.
As ICT plays a significant role in coping rural and urban poverty and encouraging
sustainable development by sharing information in rich societies and supporting the
livelihoods so it can be deployed appropriately by realizing the differential needs of urban
and rural people & they can become powerful tools of economic, social and political
empowerment.
