MUSIC VIDEO

What do you think music video is, how would you briefly define it?

A music video is a tool to express the content of a music piece throughout images. I think, besides its obvious
and simple commercial/marketing purpose, the music video is a very powerful media which can reinforce the
meaning and the expression of the music and can effectively catch the attention of the viewer.

What do you think the most important is for a music video director while directing?

A music video director has a central role in the shooting and production of a music video. Like a director of an
orchestra, he needs to have a very clear idea about how he wants the piece (performed or shoot) and he has to
transmit this idea to all the crew (or players) who is working with him. I think, being musician, this is the best
comparison I can make to express the role of a video director. The most important for a music video director
while directing is in my opinion the communication, if possible, between the composer of the piece and the
direction himself, and the synchrony between them.

Do you think music videos can work the same way with classical/jazz/folk music, etc. as with pop music?

I definitively think that music video is not only for pop music like we are mostly used to (probably for marketing
reasons), I’m also quite sure that it can work the same way. Maybe the reason why I am not sure is just because
we are not used to classical music videos, while we are very very used to pop music videos, and I will probably
change my opinion in the future when classical music videos will become more popular. The reason why I am
skeptical is the concept beyond the classical music performance: we go to the theatre or to a music hall to listen
to classical music and we want to see the musicians playing on the stage because that is part of the musical
performance, and we are all used to that.
