8. What desires and fears do the characters have?

The characters are curious about the notion of death however they are afraid of
experiencing a painful way o passing such as being scorched by fire; also, they are afraid to lose
sh

their means of living which is dependent on oil resources.

9. From your details above, how do you find Yasid, Adam, Jamal, and William?

I find Yasid, Adam, Jamal, and William praise worthy for they seem to be knowledgeable
and dedicated to their job. They are good workers who have been ripened by experience. Also,
they are well-mannered and friendly; they share a great bond of friendship.
10. It was not clear who fell. Who do you think fell? Was it intentional or accident?
I think it may have been Jamal who fell. It will be utterly tragic yet fast and befitting to
the tale’s notion of death which is unexpected and inevitable. Since most of the workers and
villagers were kind hearted and since the nature of their job is quite taxing and risky, I would
have to believe that the death was an accident.

Setting:

1. Does the description of the burnt village give you a vivid picture? What words or

eH w
descriptions help you picture out the place?

o.
rs e
“Two conflagrations of fire were seen about a hundred and forty-two yards from
ou urc
the burnt houses.”; “The heat from the fire could still be felt”; “nothing was left
untouched by the flames” These are the lines which had vividly described the scenarios
of the village being burnt to the ground. All these lines are well-written and in a way
o

saddening and gory and makes me imagine the man being burnt inside his home as well
aC s

as entire village succumbing to scorching fire.

2. Go back to the text. Pick out the oilfield or derrick description. Given a chance, would
you work in this place? Support your answer.
“Look at the sky, then to the top of the derrick and to its base. The derrick’s
ed d

shadow zigzagged on the patches of dried, yellowish grass and stretched out before
ar stu

them”; “new derrick offshore”. The derrick is located in a wide and grassy location, it is
built high as well and is in land. The new derrick to be built will be on sea because the
resources of the one at shore is predicted to deplete.”
is

If given the chance to work at a derrick by choice, I will not opt to work there
because I am not good with laborious and physical tasks. However, if not given a choice
Th

due to unfortunate circumstances, I will work there just to earn a living.

3. Is the author good enough in making you understand the story place?
Yes, the author is good enough in making me understand the story place because
sh

all his narrations and descriptions were detailed, well-thought of and highly vivid which
was completely different with its ending that ended as a cliffhanger.

Culture:
1. What cultures of Brunei are shown in the fiction?

The cultures of Brunei shown in the fiction were, hospitality, cock fighting, friendship
ties/brotherhood or regarding someone similarly as a father, and being hardworking.
2. Are there any similarities with the Philippines?
Yes, all the above-mentioned cultures are similar to that of our county’s.

Creating with Them:

The fiction is also a cliffhanger. It does not tell who fell. Filipino readers do not like
unfinished stories. Add a concluding paragraph or an ending which fits the flow of the story.
Like how quick life and death is, everything happened too fast, we were just together a
few moments ago, talking about how we wanted a gentle death and yet now his brain was
shattered into pieces. Jamal was sprawled to the ground bloodied and dead.

On a Personal Note:

m

Write a short account of how you see life after reading this story.

co

After reading the story, I realized that death is inevitable, we are not living an immortal

life for no one is susceptible to death. Even the strongest, the oldest, the bravest or even the most
rs e
exemplary or hardworking person will die. We all will pass on just on different ways and time.
ou urc
Life is unsure and short hence why we must seize every opportunity and try to be as kind as
possible to those that we treasure most.
