study carried out in 1994 in France (Sofres) showed not only organic
causes, but also widespread functional causes (theoretically curable).
However, it must also be kept in mind that the occurrence of ED is
highly complex (involving not only the individual but also the couple,
with causes that are not only medical but also social or cultural, etc.)
and the fact that not all patients can be treated by all therapies. Thus,
assuming that the main causes of ED have been identified, it may not
always be possible to treat the organic cause or to suggest a suitable
treatment for the psychogenic causes because the patient may not be
responsive. To summarize, the possibility of a definitive cure for the
disorder can clearly be discussed with certain patients. However, the
therapist must take care not to influence the patient with a promise that
cannot be fulfilled. The real and informed need expressed by the
patient must ultimately be the main reason for proposing treatment.

Title: A meta-analysis of treatment modalities for juvenile

sex offenders
This presentation reviews and analyzes recent studies concerning an
area that has only recently begun to receive attention, the treatment of
juvenile sex offenders. This review considers the treatment modalities
most used as well as the research supporting their efficacy. The five
most popular treatment modalities will be compared for effectiveness.
Those treatment modalities reviewed include cognitive behavioral,
relapse prevention, psychotherapeutic, family systems, and develop-
ment-contextual treatment. Comparisons will also made between
effectiveness outcomes for residential and outpatient treatment.
Finally, special issues for therapists who work with juvenile sex
offenders will be discussed.
