Introduction

Religion is not only a necessary but a very significant part of our lives. Many people

spent their contemplation, time and money. Even some are willing to die for the sake his or her

beliefs. There are others who even renounce the world, their families and everything they own

just to follow some religious beliefs or paths which would bring them nearer to God. Many are

ready to follow their own religion and seek answers to many confusing questions, gain peace of

mind, seek guidance through difficult times and turn to God for all they may need (Importance of

Religion in our Lives, 2010).There are also religions or denomination that leads people to

confusion and lead them to the wrong path of truth. Others are intended to deceived people and

make profit out of them. Many church founders and church leaders are claiming that they are

sent by God or even they are the Son of God; and many believe.

Apollo Quiboloy is one of them. Heis the founding leader and Executive Pastor of the

Kingdom of Jesus Christ, The Name above Every Name Inc. His ministry has a global television

channel, the ACQ-Kingdom Broadcasting Network Sonshine Media Network International and

17 radio stations in the Philippines. It also has two newspapers: Pinas and Sikat. Pinas is

internationally circulated weekly for followers in North and South America, Europe, the Middle

East, Africa, Australia, New Zealand and Asia. His followers refer to their community as a

"Kingdom Nation." They claim about 2 million "Kingdom citizens" abroad and 4 million in the

Philippines (Rodger and Turner, 2010). He proclaimed himself as the Son of God that makes

himself equal to Jesus. Also he claimed that the salvation was not over on the crucifixion of

Jesus and he is the one who will fulfill that salvation and he will finish the job of Jesus.
In this paper, the student will present the life of Apollo Quiboloy as it is presented in their

website. He will give the background of his life and the significant event that became reason of

his appointment as the “Son of God.” The first part of this paper is intended to present the life

story of Quiboloy in more detailed way. Also, it will give emphasize to his doctrine of Oneness

Pentecostalism ant the claimed of the fulfillment. On the second part of this paper will evaluate

the teaching of Quiboloy and how these teachings affect people. It will also present his concept

of God.

Early Life

Apollo C. Quiboloy was born in

a small village at the foothills of Mt.

Apo Tamayong Caliman, Davao City.

He was the youngest son among nine

children of Jose Quiboloy and Maria

Careon. It is claimed that at birth his

mother saw a vision of the face of God

smiling down from the sky which said

to her "That is my Son..." After his

birth his sister saw a big eagle on their

home (Apollo Quiboloy: The Appointed Son of God, 2012).

At the age of 14 he had a vision through his dreams about the great tribulation and it was

repeated for several nights and he saw the image of God the Father's glory with these words

written “The sun shall be turned into the darkness and the moon into blood, before that great and

notable day of the Lord come.” At the same time he heard an audible voice saying, “If ye shall

seek me, ye shall find me in my way.” After high school, Quiboloy attended a Bible college in

Makati City and began travelling and preaching around the Philippines. At the same age, he later

became the national youth president for the United Pentecostal Church. On 1970 he attended the

World Conferrence of the International Youth Corps in Korea. on the same conference he heard

the voice of God three times saying, "Gaminton Ta ka (I will used you) (Quiboloy, 2012)." At

first he thinks that he was hallucinating or somebody is tricking him, but he realized that nobody

in the conference can speak Cebuano and he is the only Filipino there. People in the conference

taught that he was crazy because his story was unbelievable.

THE BEGINNING OF HIS MINISTRY

On 1972, he had a vision in Imperial Hotel about his mission in Mt. Kitbog, a mountain

in Dadiangas, Malalag Cogon, South Cotabato, for a mission to the natives who were members

of the United Pentecostal Church. On that place he was asked to assist the head pastor of that

church. While in Kitbog, Pastor Apollo received intermittently heavenly visions and dreams.

Through divine manifestations, audible voices, and again and again, by tangible miracles, the

Father revealed Himself to him for one whole year until all his doubts and questions were

answered (Ascent to the throne:Chronology of Kingdom Revelations, 2007). After realizing that

it was really the Almighty Father who was calling him, he decided to separate himself in the

pastor of Mt. Kitbog and pursue the higher calling for him.
The Anointing

While having a two-day

vacation in Tamayong in Kitbog,

Pastor Apollo’s Anointing took place

on a Wednesday night service at a

small chapel in Tamayong while he

was preaching Galatians 5: 19-22, it is

about The Fruits of the Spirit and the

works of the flesh. According to him the Father opened his spiritual eyes and he saw heavenly

visitors appeared suddenly through the door and one heavenly messenger went up the pulpit and

poured the oil of anointing on his head. Suddenly, the chapel was filled with a heavenly scent

(Quiboloy, 2012). The congregation could not see the visitors but they could smell the fragrance

of the oil that the chapel was filled with their shouting of praise and worship. The scent stayed on

Pastor Apollo for three months, on his body, and on all his belongings. For five years, he

remained within the perimeter of one hectare and described it as his training in the University of

the Spirit. This event marked the day of anointing of Apollo Quiboloy as the Appointed Son of

God. In the University of Spirit, he went to intense challenges, trials and test for five years. After

passing the test, the Father acclaimed that he is now His son.

The Foundation

On September 1, 1985 after the anointing event, he went back to his denomination as a

changed man and he was anointed to bear the life of the Son of God and brought the message of

the Father about the deliverance from the bondage of denomination. At that time he started to
formed his own organization called the Kingdom of Jesus Christ or The Name above Every

Name Inc. Since then, he claimed that Jesus came to be the Savior for the Jewish people in their

Jewish setting, but he is the Son of God for the people of the Gentile (non-Jewish) setting

(Rodger and Turner, 2010). He started this group with 15 members and the name was revealed

by the Father in accordance of Act 12. Great numbers people believed in him and followed him.

On 1996, when his followers acknowledged him as Him as King, subjected themselves to His

Kingdom rule through His Appointed Son. The Father declared that the ministry is already a

kingdom. This was proclaimed during a concert crusade at the Araneta Coliseum.

On April 13 2005, he claimed that the Almighty Father has finished all of His spiritual

works that He wanted to finish in man through him and he is now in a state of perfection similar

to Adam before the fall. On the same date marked his Kingship as the Appointed Son of God and

the declaration of the Day of the Lord (Quiboloy, 2012). He has now 4 million followers here in

the Philippines and another two million abroad such as Australia, England, Kenya and many

other nations. At present, he is so influential in the Philippines that he is starting to play a part in

Filipino politics.
B. Doctrines

The following are the summary of Quiboloys teaching. This summary came from

the Christian Apologetics and Research Ministry (CARM) article written by Daniel Rodger and

Ryan Turner (2010). This summary was based on Quiboloy’s on words that can be found on his

website the Kingdom of Jesus Christ. In his website, Quiboloy’s is writing and posting his

doctrine.

1. General

A. Oneness Pentecostalism leanings with a denial of the Trinity.

B. Theology or the idea that God wants people to be healthy and wealthy if

they have enough faith.

C. Radical exclusivism

2. Jesus

A. Jesus was the savior for the Jews and Quiboloy is the savior for the

Gentiles.

B. Quiboloy makes himself equal to Jesus by calling himself a begotten Son

and the Son of God. Also, Quiboloy claimed to be ushered into sonship in

2003 in the same sense that Jesus has eternal sonship.

C. Quiboloy is in a state of perfection similar to that which Adam

experienced before the Fall.

Fall

i. Serpent Seed Doctrine: Eve had sex with the serpent in the Garden to

cause the Fall.

3. Salvation
A. We can only have salvation by acknowledging 'Pastor' Quiboloy as the

Son of God.

B. God’s work of salvation was not finished at the cross.

4. Bible

A. Authoritative in so far as it is interpreted by Quiboloy.

B. Quiboloy is seeking to add a new written revelation to the Bible in his

Book of Fulfillment.

C. Quiboloy constantly twists Scripture to support his erroneous doctrines

The Atoment of Jesus and Quiboloy as the Appointed Son of God

He teaches that Jesus died and on the third day rose again. According to him that the

Jesus died mainly to take the “Sonship and the Kingship” from Satan. it is a revelation that is

hidden from Christians. The finality of the redemption work is not yet complete as this “Sonship

and the Kingship” which was taken by the “Begotten Son” from Satan should be given back to

mankind through an heir, another Son, namely the “Appointed Son”. According to Quiboloy, the

“Begotten Son” who is now the “Father” after he died on the Cross and was resurrected looked

for an heir, another Son, but everyone failed and did not pass the test. Since the “Father”, who

was the “Begotten Son” before, has an heir, the “Sonship and Kingship” will be given to

mankind through this “Appointed Son”. As the “Begotten Son” was the standard of

righteousness in a period he called the “Jewish Setting”, today it is the “Appointed Son” that is

the standard of righteousness. This righteousness is given only to those who submit themselves

to the “Appointed Son”. Since everybody failed and only he who passed the test and the

challenges given by the Father and he is the only one who qualified to be the "Appointed Son of

God"(Quiboloy, 2012).
Quiboloy teaches that when the Begotten Son in the Jewish setting, Jesus Christ, came

and paid the price of people's redemption through His death on the cross, salvation did not end

there. He was waiting for a descendant of the First Adam to be born in His Spirit or the

"Appointed Son of God", which is he. Quiboloy teaches that he will finish the unfinished work

of salvation of the Father. He became the new model of mankind and became the basis of

salvation. Since he is the "Appointed Son of God" he is the only one who has the access to know

the absolute truth of salvation. As "the Appointed Son of God" whatever he will say is absolute.

He also teaches that only those who will believe in him will be saved

Oneness Pentecostal

Another doctrine of Quiboloy is the ‘Oneness Pentecostalism’ that which denies the

Trinity. It is the theology that affirms that there exist only one God and in all the universe and

affirms the divinity of Jesus and the divinity of the Holy Spirit; but denies the Trinity. They deny

the Trinity because they understand this doctrine is asserting three different Gods (Slick, 2010).

Oneness theology teaches that God is a single person manifested as the Father in creation and the

Father of the Son; in the Son of our redemption; and the Holy Spirit in our regeneration.

He is denying the biblical revelation of the Triune God. He claimed that Jesus Christ is

the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit and He is a single person. He is teaching people who

only speaks in tongues as initial evidence that they possess the Holy Spirit and it is necessary for

salvation (Justyn, 2006). The authority of his teaching is the Bible itself, and the revelation of the

Father that reveals only to him. In addition, he also maintains that baptism is a necessary part of

salvation; that is, in order to be saved, one must be baptized and it must also be administered

with the formula "in Jesus name". If you are not baptized you cannot be saved He is claiming

that the true baptism is through immersion only, because through immersion you are cleansed
wholly and the Father will make you perfect and totally clean (Quiboloy, 2012).

Evaluation

Apollo Quiboloy and his religious group, The Kingdom of Jesus Christ or The Name

Above Every Name Inc, converts many people. Most teaching of him is not against common

morality of a civilized society. Like every religious group, they promote peace and detest moral

ills and they teach their members to live a good life (Henry, 2011). The problem is he claimed

that he is the “Appointed Son of God.” He is not just “a son of God” but rather he claimed that

he is “the Son of God”. As the “Appointed Son of God” he claimed that he has the only access to

the “real” truth and God himself reveal it to him directly. He is asserting that people can only

blessed and become successful, if they believed in his words and teachings. In this kind of

teaching, I can assert that God of Quiboloy is something biased, and a God who is exclusive, a

God can be owned by a religion. His God is judging people based on their religion and not by

their good works. On his his TV shows, sermons and website are full of Scripture, but

unfortunately he gives only his personal interpretation. This interpretation makes the revelation
of God subjective and became fully human. The listeners and followers are deceived by

Quiboloy. He can use the gospel and the ignorance of people to glorify himself.

Second, the salvation on the cross was useless, because according to him Jesus only save

the Jews and the salvation is not yet over. He claimed that he is the one who will finish it. I can

assert that the crucifixion of Jesus is useless and the teaching and examples of Jesus is outdated,

because Quiboloy himself said that he was chosen by God to be the role model and to be the

fulfillment. He is asserting that he is more powerful than Jesus, because he is the fulfillment of

salvation. Quiboloy is self proclaimed God that puts the salvation of people at risk. He is

deceiving his followers through his charismatic way of teaching. He obviously claiming that

Jesus simply wasn't enough. In his view God actually needed someone else to finish the job and

a new messenger to pass on a new message and new gospel which is something Christians are

clearly warned about in the New Testament. If one thing is clear, it's that what Quiboloy is

teaching is contrary to the Gospel Jesus brought to us and must be considered to be another

gospel and a false one at that, just as Paul describes in Galations 1:8-9: "But even if we or an

angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him

be accursed. 9 As we have said before, so now I say again: If anyone is preaching to you a gospel

contrary to the one you received, let him be accursed" (Rodger and Turner, 2010).

Third he is using the name of God for financial motivation. He became rich and

influential because of tithes of his followers. Quiboloy is just like the rest who use certain

biblical to scare his followers into giving him lots of their well earned cash and possessions. He

claimed that only favors who are giving tithes like he said;

“The Son [Pastor Quiboloy] has been blessed thus far because he is the number 1 giver!
Did you know that the Son [Pastor Quiboloy] would give 90% as his tithe and offering and leave
the 10% for himself? That is why we should not be surprised why the Almighty Father has
blessed the Son [Pastor Quiboloy] with everything...The Father has seen that the more He has
blessed the Son [Pastor Quiboloy], the more committed, trustworthy, honest, loyal and generous
he has become. The more has the Father been able to use him for His purposes (Quiboloy cited
in Rodger and Turner, 2010).”

He is using the name of God to his personal interest and makes great impact to financial aspects

of people’s lives. He is teaching explicitly that God loves only those giving tithes. God is not

merciful and God is materialist.

Fourth, he is a member of Oneness Pentecostal church. He teaching asserts that God is a

singular spirit who is one person, not three divine persons, individuals or minds. "Father", "Son"

and "Holy Spirit" are merely titles reflecting the different personal manifestations of the One

True God in the universe. When he speak of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, he see these

as three personal manifestations of one being, one personal God. The Father and the Holy Spirit

is one and the same personal God. He teaches that the "Holy Spirit" is a descriptive title for God

the Father manifesting himself through his Church and in the world. Since he claims that he is

the “Son of God” he himself claimed that he is a God.

Conclusion

Quiboloy is a false prophet that deceived his followers for personal interest. He is use the

ignorance of people about God as opportunity to become powerful and influential. Instead of

helping people to deepen their faith, He rather put in the risk. He puts the teaching of Jesus to his

own mouth. He leads people to confusion and fives them false doctrines about God. He puts God

in humanistic point of view.
