UTILIZING RECYCLED LOW-DENSITY POLYETHYLENE THERMOPLASTIC TO
CONSTRUCT AN ECO-FRIENDLY STAGE EXTENSION

INTRODUCTION

Plastics are wide range of synthetic or semi-synthetic materials that are used in a

huge and growing range of applications. We use plastics to make our lives easier and

more convenient. Plastics are polymer, very long chain molecules linked together with

chemical bond. Plastics are organic materials, and the raw materials used to produce

plastics are cellulose, gas, and oil that are considered as non-renewable resources.

Nowadays, plastics are becoming a growing segment of the world’s solid waste.

While plastics offer convenience, they also create unnecessary waste in landfills. As

plastics are non-biodegradable, they remain for ages in the environment (Singh et.al,

2018). Plastics and plastic bottles are one of the environmental problems in our world

today. They are one of the major causes of flooding and landslide. Thus, unlike other

waste, plastics are difficult to biodegrade. But the best way to reduce or minimize these

plastics is to reuse or recycle. There are many types of plastic such as PET or

polyethylene terephthalate that is usually found in plastic bottles, HDPE (high-density

polyethylene) , PVC (polyvinyl chloride),LDPE (low-density polyethylene),

polypropylene, polysterene and others. Each type of plastic has different safety levels and

the safest choices to use are HDPE, LDPE, and polypropylene because most of these

plastics has no known health concerns, unlike PET and PVC that leach chemicals like

carcinogen and antimony that are hazardous when a human is exposed to.

Low-density polyethylene (LDPE) is one of the safest choices to recycle. LDPE is a

thermoplastic made from petroleum. It can be found transluscent or opaque. It is mainly

found in household items like plastic wrap, grocery bags, frozen food containers and

squeezable bottles. LDPE and HDPE are safe to melt and has a low melting point of 105

to 115 degree celcius (221 to 239 degree farenheit). LDPE are widely used. You can

always see LDPE everywhere, but one of the major problems in our environment

especially the sea creatures that die when they swallow plastics like this. Since these

plastics are widely used and at the same time, a problem to our environment, it should be

reused and recycled. Utilizing melted LDPE plastics will be used to construct an

environment-friendly stage extension or platform to solve one of the problems in

HCPSMSHS/CCSHS.

Statement of the Problem

CCSHS/HCPSMSHS Senior High celebrates activities in our campus every

month like subject culminating activities, jingle contest, intramurals and others. However,

the problem is, students usually perform in the hallway downstairs that has an undeniably

a little space, so performances or activities are sometimes celebrated lousy and

uncomfortable. Therefore, the best way to solve this problem is to have an eco-friendly

stage extension or platform to make the event’s place more spacious and for the

activities/contests to be performed comfortable and exceptional.

Purpose Statement

The purpose of this project is to develop an environment-friendly and cost

effective stage extension through the utilization of LDPE plastics that are widely

consumed everyday, a waste that would otherwise be deposited in a landfill can now be a

solution to the school problem, which is lack of space. This project also aims to answer

the following questions:

1. What are the chemicals found in low-density polyethylene (LDPE) plastics?

2. What will be the process of the construction of the alternative eco-friendly

stage extension?

3. Are LDPE plastics toxic and harmful to our health?

4. What will be the difference in the costing of constructing the eco-friendly stage
extension vs. buying a stage extension in the market?

RESEARCH BASED CRITERIA

The purpose of this project is to contruct an eco-friendly and cost-effective alternative

stage extension or platform through utilization of low-density polyethylene (LDPE)

plastics to solve one of the problems in HCPMSHS Senior High Campus, which is lack

of space.

Procedure

STEP 1. COLLECT

There are different melting points for each type of plastics. The plastics that will be

collected should have the same melting points and these should be low-density

polyethylene that are easy to find.

STEP 2. WASHING
UTILIZING RECYCLED LOW-DENSITY POLYETHYLENE THERMOPLASTIC TO

It is important to clean the plastic before use. When there are solvents attached to the

plastic, the impurities will cause problems in the melting by creating excess smoke and

will prevent the plastic from sticking to each other.
