This case report describes a rare case of Superior Mesenteric Artery (SMA) Syndrome in a 22-year-old female patient. SMA Syndrome is caused by a reduction in the angle between the SMA and the aorta, compressing the third part of the duodenum. This can result in duodenal obstruction, especially after rapid weight loss. The report details the diagnostic challenges of SMA Syndrome and treatment options such as nonsurgical management or duodenojejunostomy if nonsurgical options fail or symptoms are refractory. The case report aims to increase awareness of this rare condition.

Artery Syndrome. M.C. Venkateswarlu 1, K.B.S. Prabhakar 2 & S. Praveen3 1 Assistant Professor, 2 Associate Professor , 3Third year Post Graduate student, Department Of General Surgery, Siddhartha Medical College, Government General Hospital, Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, India. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Abstract: Superior mesenteric artery (SMA) syndrome is a rare disorder that is caused by a reduction in the aortomesenteric angle causing a duodenal obstruction, most frequently occurring in patients who have had rapid weight loss. Identification of this syndrome can be a diagnostic dilemma and is frequently made by exclusion. The symptoms are caused by compression of the third portion of the duodenum against the posterior structures by a narrow angled superior mesenteric artery. When nonsurgical management is not possible or the problem is refractory, surgical intervention is necessary. We report a case of SMA syndrome in a 22 years old female patient, its diagnostic challenges and treatment options. Keywords: Superior mesenteric artery syndrome, Duodenal obstruction, Weight loss, Duodenojejunostomy.
