Dangdut music is a blend of local Indonesian music with Indian and Malaysian film music, as
well as Western rock music. This combination of styles was first used in Jakarta, around the end
of the 1960s. Then this style reached the peak of its popularity in the 1970s and 1980s.
Quoting from the Encyclopedia Britannica, dangdut music emerged in the 20th century. Starting
from the desire of young Indonesian musicians to make modern music that appeals to various
circles. Reporting from the Padang Institute of Technology website, dangdut music was born
from the influence of Indian music in the Bollywood film entitled 'Boneka India'.
Around the 1950s, this Bollywood film was very popular among the Indonesian people. In 1968,
Rhoma Irama was one of the pioneers of dangdut music in Indonesia. Slowly, this music became
widely known by the public around the 1970s. Not only influenced by Indian music, dangdut
music is also influenced by Arabic music, especially in the crooked part and harmonizing the
tone. From 1970 to 1980, dangdut music became the prima donna of a music genre that was in
great demand by Indonesians. Initially the story in the dangdut song departed from a romantic
story.
However, the longer dangdut music also discusses various social issues and invites listeners to
always remember the teachings of Islam. Rhoma Irama is a figure who popularized dangdut until
he was nicknamed "King of Dangdut". The popularity of dangdut music has made this music
banned by the government to be broadcast on state radio and television. In the 1990s the
government considered music to be one of the important symbols in Indonesia's development
and removed barriers that might have existed before. Although now the fame of dangdut music is
not as great as it used to be, but dangdut music is still very popular. Not only by the Indonesian
people, but also by the international community.
Besides Rhoma Irama, other legendary dangdut musicians are Elvy Sukaesih, Meggy Z, Caca
Handika, Mansyur S, Evie Tamala, Ida Laila, Iis Dahlia, Ikke Nurjanah, Inul Daratista, to Via
Vallen and Nella Kharisma.
