The classification of the genre in tradisional Indonesia’s music

Music is something that we hear everyday. It has always been a part of every culture in
everycountry, including Indonesia country. The music of Indonesia make a display of its culture
various, the creativity of local musical, as well as following foreign musical influences that shape
of Indonesia music, belonging the genre of traditional music of Indonesia. There are several
traditional genre of Indonesia music, such as Keroncong, Dangdut, and Campursari. All of them
have different sound, rhythm, and give rise to emotions.

Keroncong has a long history. In the 16th century, when sailors from the Portuguese Empire
brought instrumens and music to Indonesia, Keroncong music started. The term keroncong
derives from the ukulele instrument’s (crong crong crong sound) and the chrorn and crong that
occur when a pair of instrument is interlocked. In areas sucs as North Jakarta and Manado,
which later become part of Indonesia, this music was played in the communitie of freed
Portuguese slaves. It has adopted local Indonesian characteristics over time, Especially in Solo,
central Java, where elements of gamelan music and the Javanese language have been combined.
An orchestra and a vocalist are part of the keroncong esemble. The central ensemble consists of
the flute, violin, two ukuleles, cello, double bass and guitar. With slow notes that are sustained,
the vocalist sings the melody. Begawan Solo which written by Gesang Martoharno , a musician
from Solo, is the most popular song in Keroncong style.

One of the more popular forms of genre that has been formed much more recently is dangdut.
The music of Dangdut is take root in the Malay music, which began to evolve in the 1940’s.
With elements of musical genres from India and combined with the rhythm of Arabic music, the
Dangdut rhythm is very thichk. In the same way, a dangdut consists of an orchestra and a
vocalist or lead singer, male or female, and four to eight mucsicians are assisted. Instrument
commonly includes a tabla ( also reffered as Gendang ) flute, mandolin, guitars, and drum. The
song of dangdut is easy to absorb the song of risk, so it is not hard to be emberaced by society.
Some of dangdut have moral value and some of dangdut just for entertatain people when they are
spending their leisure time.
for example in the song ‘Keramat’ who is created by Rhoma Irama, known as the King of
Dangdut, it has moral value that told us the moral message in a family to honor a mother who
gave birth to us.

Lastly, campursari is traditional Javanese music and dangdut fusion style that prevalent in
the Javanese cultural sphere, primaly Central Java, Yogyakarta and East Java. The campursari
music is played with gamelan instruments consisting of: Slenthem, Peking, Kendang, Gong,
Bonang and a flute. Campursari music became famous when the name Manthous (Sumanto-red)
skyrocketed at the beginning of its development. Manthous is a well-known campursari musician
at that time. Campursari music tends to use everyday language for the language of the song. In
addition, the Campursari song tells a lot about the life of the little people. The story of how
difficult it is for the little people to find work, to fulfill their livelihoods. Not only that, the
Campursari song also often tells about lilting love. Instance in the song of sewu kutho, layang
kangen and suket teki who created by Didi Kempot who is given epithet by his lover as The
Godfather of Broken Heart.
To sum up everything that has been stated, each genre of traditional music above has its own
style of the traditional music. These style differ in term of rhythms, lyrics and performance
characteristic. All of them has owns audience which makes people happy to hear it. Most all
people recommend to listening dangut because it can go up a spirit when people doing their
activity.
