Measurement
• “Measurement is the process of comparison of the given
physical quantities with the known standard quantity of
the same nature".
• There is a difference between Measurement and quantity.
• Measurement is used to measure quantities.
• Quantity is something that has magnitude, size, or
amount (volume).
• A quantity is not the same as a measurement.

3
For example: If cloth of unknown
length is given and we want to
measure its length, we need to
compare its length with a standard
of length, i. e . Meter in S.I system .

4
Unit
• “Unit
is a standard with which things are being
compared”
• Beforeevery measurement a precise unit should
be chosen.
• The size of the quantity then found with an
instrument having scale marked in the units.

5
For example: The length of the cloth
measured is 4 meter, here meter is
the standard with which
comparison is made, and thus
meter is the unit of length.

6
Magnitude:
• Definition:A number written with a proper unit
is called as magnitude.
• Example:As the length of the unknown cloth
measured is 4 meter, expressed as 4m. Here 4 is
a number and m(meter) is the unit, thus 4m is
the magnitude of length.
