This report is organized into three sections. In the first section, we leverage data from millions of learners on
Coursera to identify skills proficiency gaps between students and working professionals that may contribute to the
employability gap. In the second section, we propose a model for addressing this employability gap by leveraging
blended learning to bridge curriculum gaps and teach in-demand skills at scale. In the third and final section, we
explore long-term skills trends that illustrate how the short shelf-life of digital skills might be part of the story that
explains why these student skills proficiency gaps exist.
Research suggests that recent economic volatility and rising unemployment caused by the pandemic has
only intensified pressure on universities to equip students with in-demand skills. With greater transparency
into existing workforce trends, universities can align curriculum with market demand to help ensure graduates Featured majors
are industry-ready.
In this section, we leveraged our data to uncover gaps between skills university students have and skills they’ll
