The Unbounded University: Unlocking Opportunities Through Online Learning 2

Introduction
During the past year, the pandemic has COVID-19 has increased focus on digital transformation in higher education. In setting long-term goals, universities
posed unprecedented challenges for and colleges globally will need to refocus on the following set of priorities:

universities. As campuses shuttered, Student employability: Developing curricula that teach job-relevant skills to help ensure

students learning.
Faculty development: Enabling faculty members to develop capabilities to help teach
students in a virtual environment.

Innovation: Embracing technology to drive innovation as a university brand.

This report is organized into three sections. In the first section, we leverage data from millions of learners on
Coursera to identify skills proficiency gaps between students and working professionals that may contribute to the
employability gap. In the second section, we propose a model for addressing this employability gap by leveraging
blended learning to bridge curriculum gaps and teach in-demand skills at scale. In the third and final section, we
explore long-term skills trends that illustrate how the short shelf-life of digital skills might be part of the story that
explains why these student skills proficiency gaps exist.

Student Outcomes:
Bridging the
Employability Gap
Introduction

Research suggests that recent economic volatility and rising unemployment caused by the pandemic has
only intensified pressure on universities to equip students with in-demand skills. With greater transparency
into existing workforce trends, universities can align curriculum with market demand to help ensure graduates Featured majors
are industry-ready.

In this section, we leveraged our data to uncover gaps between skills university students have and skills they’ll

need to succeed in the workforce.1 Specifically, we evaluated students’ business, technology, and data science
skills across majors as well as the average time it would take each student to develop skills needed to be job-

The biological sciences field is evolving as computing, data processing, and artificial intelligence fuel new
advancements. Applications of biological sciences are even aiding the COVID-19 response with faster
identification of the virus and more effective diagnostics. Rank Biological Sciences

Our data show that biological sciences students are most interested in becoming biologists, microbiologists, 1. Biologist

deepen expertise in are data management, computer programming, and statistical programming. To close the
data management skills gap, students would need an average of 47 days of dedicated learning—which is more
than half a semester.

COURSE CATALOG GAPS

Our college catalog gaps leverage a dataset of publicly available course
catalogs from over 1,800 colleges and universities. CourseMatch is an NLP
machine learning solution that matches on-campus courses to the most
relevant courses on Coursera. By linking course catalogs to Coursera courses
and then leveraging the Coursera Skills Graph to link Coursera courses to the
skills they teach, we are able to see which skills are and are not being taught
in the typical University course catalog.

By leveraging this rich dataset, we consider a skill rarely available if less

than 25% of university catalogs contain a course teaching the skill and
generally available otherwise. This dataset allows us to examine whether
campus learners are seeking out online courses in skills often taught at their
university or skills that are unlikely to be taught at their university, and also
identify which skills essential to work are typically missing from university
offerings.

Coursera users are able to identify their current occupation and an
interested occupation within their account on the Coursera platform in
order to improve course recommendations tailored to their interests.
We use these datasets to identify the current and intended future
occupations of our learners. To determine which 10 occupations
university students are most interested in by major, we look for
occupations that over-index in the data. We do this to better reveal
the kinds of occupations in which students in a particular major are
disproportionately interested.
2. For each competency, we take the 70th percentile skill score of learners
on Coursera who are currently working in the aforementioned top ten
occupations to be the “target proficiency” that students in a particular
major should aim for. The skills gap is defined as the difference
between the students’ current proficiency within a major-skill pair and
the students’ target proficiency within a major-skill pair. This skills gap
methodology was developed in conjunction with the World Economic
Forum for use in their Future of Jobs report.
