THE ABSTRACT
The abstract gives a synopsis of the research
study. The maximum length is 120-150 words.
Some guidelines are: Begin the abstract on
a new page and type the word ABSTRACT in upper
case, bold, and centered. Type the abstract itself as
a single paragraph in block format (i.e., without
paragraph indentation).
The abstract usually contains the objective or
purpose of the study, followed by the research
design, research subject, research instruments, and
statistical tools if the study is quantitative. The
highlights of the results are then given, if possible be
quantitative. The highlights of the results are then
given, if possible be quantitative, or as the nature of
the paper permits. Uncommon acronyms should be
spelled out the first time they are used. If there are
several acronyms, list them with their meaning at the
end of the abstract. Then given the major
conclusions and provide at least 6-8 keywords at the
end of the abstract.
Keywords (for quantitative) include the
subject area, variables, research subject, research
design, statistical tools, and geographical location.
In qualitative, the abstract contains the
purpose of the study, research design, research
participants, data sources, data analysis and the
results of the study and at least 1 recommendation.
The keywords include the field of
specialization, phenomenon, research participants,
research design, data analysis, and geographical
location.
Writing the Action Research Abstract
Key Components of the Abstract:
1. Topic Introduction
2. Chief purpose/aim
3. Method (design, techniques, and optional
sub-parts: instruments, statistical treatment
4. Salient Results/Findings
5. Conclusions
6. Recommendations

Elements of Keywords in Action Research:

1. Discipline of the study
2. Concepts studied
3. Research Design
4. Setting of the Study (country of origin)

Guidelines to Avoid Plagiarism

Plagiarism is a violation of intellectual property,
and proper documentation must be exercised;
otherwise, the research will commit research
misconduct which is punishable by expulsion.
Hence, the Research Office in its effort to eliminate
the threat of plagiarism in all the research work of
the students and faculty, has come up with the
following guidelines. Observance of this guidelines
is a must.
Paraphrase is a restatement and
restructuring of ideas for the purpose of clarifying the
meaning of a text. Restatement means that you
paraphrase the original using your own words.
However, you do not just change some words in the
materials; you also need to change the flow of ideas
in the effort to make the original meaning clearer.
1. Paraphrase the statement copied from
books, magazines, newspapers, refeered
and non-refereed journals, published and
unpublished thesis, articles and internet
sources or non-print materials by changing
the form without altering the message of the
original.
1.1. Enclose in quotation marks or italicize the
statement if the statement is taken
verbatim. The page number must also be
indicated with the abbreviation (p.) or
(pp.). However, citing the name of the
author and the year is also a must.
1.2. Change the voice of the verb. If the
original is in active voice, then change it
to passive voice. However, citing the
name of the author and the year is also a
must.
1.3. Use synonyms. In using synonyms, you
may or may not change the structure of
the sentence. But the same, always
indicate the name of the author and the

sentences, change them into complex
sentence or make it as a compound
sentence or compound-complex
sentence; however, citing the name of
the author and year of publication is still
a must.
1.5. Use the inverted order to paraphrase the
statement of the author by citing his/her
name and the year of publication.

Sample of an excerpt from a speech of Dr. Victor

Ordonez.
“Research tells us that a child’s aptitude for
linguistic skills comes at a much earlier age than
his or her aptitude for computation skills. But in
classroom, an equal amount of time, at every
grade, is given to both. An experiment in
Michigan had 50 schools that did not teach
arithmetic at all in the first four grades, or to give
more time to language and other subjects, but
only un Grade 5-7. At the end of that period, they
took the standard arithmetic tests that all the
other schools were taking, and fared equally
well. Did the other schools waste 40 minutes a
day teaching arithmetic for the first four years?”
-Victor Ordonez Speech on the occasion of being
conferred an honorary doctoral degree by De La
Salle University (January 26,2009).

Paraphrased Item:
Dr. Victor Ordonez, in his speech delivered
on January 26,2009, cited about an experiment
conducted to 50 schools in Michigan where
arithmetic was not taught in Grade 1-4 but only to
Grade 5-7 to give more time to language and other
subjects. After Grade 7, the students tool
standardized Arithmetic test. The result showed that
they performed equally well with those students who
took arithmetic since Grade 1. The result confirmed
the research that had earlier established that
children’s “aptitude for computational skills”
develops much later than their “aptitude for linguistic
skills”. One wonders then if those who had been
taking arithmetic since Grade 1 wasted 40 minutes
daily for four years.
Consideration For Grading The Oral Defense
(4 Panel Members)

Content (30%)
Content refers to the thesis itself. The
objectives of the study have been obtained. There
are scientific bases in the depth of analysis and rigor
of methodology used in the research study. The
focus, during the defense is on the substance rather
style.

Presentation (30%)
Presentation of the thesis should not exceed
30 minutes. The student-group must demonstrate
mastery of the study through oral and logical
presentation of the problems, methodologies,
findings and conclusions.
Transparencies of Power-Point
presentations should give the summary of the work
and do not merely repeat the verbatim content of the
thesis manuscript.

Defense (40%)
The student-group must defend their
positions, justify interpretations, decisions made and
arrived at conclusions.
The thesis defense is to prove that they did
the research work. They are knowledgeable of the
basic principles of their discipline.
The student-group must show mastery of
their study by being able to critically evaluate and
present their findings by showing the relation of their
work without previous works and by building up or
adding to existing knowledge in the area of their
discipline.

V11. GENERAL GUIDELINES AND

POLICIES FOR GRADUATE RESEARCH

The graduate research program of the

college is an essential element in transmitting the
most recent advances in knowledge and for training
the new generations of teachers in the methods and
techniques of research.
Graduate students should be aware of the
undertakings they have to undergo as they enter the
graduate studies. They have already a learning
experience how to do research and learn further as
they go through the process. An initial planning of a
research project to undertake is of importance for
every graduate student and to gradually start
collecting the literature review of the research they
plan to conduct and have already a thorough
understanding of the relevant techniques in the field
of research.

Graduate Research and the Research Adviser

The quality of a successful completion of the
research undertaken is dependent on the
effectiveness of the relationship between the
graduate student and the research adviser. This one
of the mechanisms by which the assurance of quality
outcomes/outputs can be achieved.

The Research Adviser

A Research Adviser is a member of the
Academic staff who is responsible for providing help,
support and mentoring to a graduate student in order

program of study and research.
• Guiding the student, the conduct of the
research in a manner which observes the
highest practicable standards of safety for
the subjects.
• Encouraging the student to publish and
present aspects of the study within or outside
of the college.

Responsibilities of the Graduate Research

Student
• Select the appropriate topic for research with
the assistance of the research adviser.

with the adviser to ensure regular contact
and maintaining the progress of the research
in stages earlier agreed upon.
• Ensuring the work of others is appropriately
acknowledged.
• Ensuring of the text, ensuring that the
language is technically correct and all other
technical details are accurate and complete.
• Consulting with the adviser if he/she is
interesting to publish his/her research.
• Ensuring that his/her research is conducted
according to the highest practicable
standards of integrity and safety of the
subjects.
