Read Jody Heyman’s essay “We Can Afford to Give Parents a Break”, and discuss the
patterns of development she uses. Which of these patterns prevails in the overall essay?
Which does she use in specific sections or paragraphs?

Well, the author of "We Can Afford to Give Parents a Break", Jody Heyman did not
use any extra words and wrote down directly about this passage. Heyman obviously used
cause and effect patterns of development. She shows rebuttal statements for the myths
about mothering policies. In the beginning of her essay, she actually explains the issue and
makes it widen to understand more the following issues regarding logos and pathos. Other
patterns of development she used is the compare and contrast method, which really helps to
elaborate more on the issues such as the Ireland versus the US’ economic growth, low
versus middle income mothers, and more. Moreover, Heyman also used exemplification to
give information about certain countries that do not accept maternity leave. Lastly, as it is
noticeable, classification and division technique is also used since it strengthens and
highlights Heyman’s perception that the US do not seem to be part of those who do not
support family members. With this, the US is one of the countries who fails to be supportive
when it comes to family.
