Personal Entrepreneurial Competencies (PECs)
What is It
This lesson will help you develop and strengthen your Competencies and Skills needed in the
business.
Entrepreneurial competencies - refers to the significant characteristics that an individual must have to
perform entrepreneurial functions efficiently.
1. Hardworking: This means habitually working diligently for long hours. Hardworking people keep
on striving to improve their performance to produce quality products and provide better services.
2. Self-confident: Entrepreneurs are confident in their abilities and trust their judgment. They exhibit
self-confidence to cope with all the risks of operating their own business.
3. Disciplined: Successful entrepreneurs always stick to the plan and fight the temptation to do what
is insignificant.
4. Committed: A good entrepreneur accepts full responsibility for everything in the business and is
determined to succeed.
5. Able to accept change: Nothing is permanent but change. Change occurs frequently. An
entrepreneur copes with and thrives on positive changes to make the business grow.
6. Creative: An entrepreneur should be creative and innovative to stay in business and to have an
edge in the competition.
8. Profit-Oriented: An entrepreneur enters into the business to generate profit or additional income.
Therefore, an entrepreneur must see to it that it will become profitable.
1. Excellent planner: an entrepreneur must have strategic thinking and goals to achieve objectives
by carefully maximizing all the available resources. In realizing his dreams, a good entrepreneur
develops and applies step-by-step plans.
2. Possesses people skills: refers to the entrepreneurial ability to effectively and efficiently
communicate and relate to people working within and outside the business. In day-to-day business
transactions, you need to deal with people.
3. Sound decision maker: Successful entrepreneurs can think quickly and make wise decisions
towards pre-determined objectives. An appropriate decision should arise from verified
facts/information and should be towards the pre-determined goals.
