Topic: The Spouse, a poem by Luis G. Dato

THINK
1. What are your thoughts about marriage?
-Marriage for me is beautiful because it helps you discover a new dimension in you. When a man
and a woman get married, two will become one. Marriage gives us a life partner, a teammate in
life. A teammate that will be with me through the challenges of life together.
2. What are your thoughts about friendship?
-Friendship for me is when people know all about you but like you anyway.

LEARN
In this lesson, you will read a poem that talks about marriage, and a folktale from Bicol
that talks about friendship.

EXPLAIN
1. Describe the kind of relationship that the husband and wife have?
-I think that their relationship is kind of toxic because, the poem is about an abused spouse, and
she can’t do anything about it because she loves her husband so much.

2. Paraphrase the narrative of the poem.

3. What is the symbolism of the rose in the first line?

-The “Rose” and Fragrant with scent that wakens love from sleeping are directly attributed to
women’s power of enticing men to love.

4. Predict the kind of future that the couple will have.

- I predict that the couple will eventually fall, because the man does not reciprocate what the
woman I giving to him. Only the woman is sacrificing. On the other hand, the husband too must
repress himself. This may be a form of oppression and deprivation. But it is how it works

5. What is the message that you got from the poem?

- This poem reminds us of equality between sexes. Man and woman share equal responsibilities,
struggles, sorrows and joy when it comes to love. Getting involved in an intimate relationship
means facing responsibilities.
