1. What are the health benefits of playing basketball?

If the aim of an individual is to stay fit and healthy, basketball is the perfect choice as it
comes with more than a few health benefits – improving physical, emotional, and mental health.
Basketball involves continuous running and jumping, making it a good exercise for burning
calories and improving an individual’s stamina and body composition. This sport lowers and
prevents the possibility of developing cardiovascular diseases. Playing this sport can be a good
therapeutic activity for mental health as it produces good hormones, such as endorphins, thus
reducing stress and improving one’s overall self-esteem; boosting one’s confidence and helping
eliminate one’s bad habit.

2. Do you think it is important to include basketball in physical education? Why and why not?

Yes, I think that including basketball in the curriculum of physical education is essential.
In consideration of the objective of physical education, which is to improve physical fitness,
appreciation of physical activity, development of sportsmanship and improvement of social
skills, basketball is befitting and appropriate on such objective. Basketball helps students to
become physically active, encouraging them to live their lives with the aim of staying fit and
healthy. Including basketball in the curriculum is a stride that people in the academe could take
in able to attain the rationale of physical education. Also, aside from all the skills that this sport
could teach to the students, this sport promotes camaraderie as well. Instilling to the students’
minds the importance of teamwork and sportsmanship is one of the reason why basketball is a
great sport to promote in school.

3. Review the 11 Components of Physical Fitness. What are the component being enhanced and
developed by playing basketball and explain why.

Basketball enhances and develop both skill-related and health-related components of


physical fitness. For skill-related, five of its components are developed: Agility, Coordination,
Speed, Power, and Reaction Time. While in health-related skills, all its components are
enhanced: Strength, Cardiovascular Fitness, Muscular Endurance, Flexibility, and Body
Composition. All of the skills needed in playing basketball, from shooting, passing, dribbling, and
all the footwork involve, can progressively enhance all of these fitness components. All these
skills combined can help people achieve that certain physical fitness that they need.
