The journey of the oxygen

The REpIratory SysteM

Your respiratory system is the network
of organs and tissues that help you
breathe. This system helps your body
absorb oxygen from the air so your
organs can work. It also cleans waste
gases, such as carbon dioxide, from your
blood. Common problems include allergies,
diseases or infections.
The PATHWAY of air
Primary function is to obtain oxygen
for use by body's cells & eliminate
carbon dioxide that cells produce
Includes respiratory airways leading
into (& out of) lungs plus the lungs
themselves

Pathway of air: nasal cavities >

pharynx > trachea > primary bronchi >
secondary bronchi > tertiary bronchi >
bronchioles > alveoli
Lungs
The lungs are a pair of spongy, air-filled organs located on
either side of the chest. The trachea conducts inhaled air into
the lungs through its tubular branches, called bronchi. The
bronchi then divide into smaller and smaller branches, finally
becoming microscopic.
The gas exchange
Gas exchange is the process by which oxygen and
carbon dioxide move between the bloodstream and
the lungs. This is the primary function of the
respiratory system and is essential for ensuring a
constant supply of oxygen to tissues, as well as
removing carbon dioxide to prevent its
accumulation.
The circulatory system
The circulatory system delivers oxygen and
nutrients to cells and takes away wastes. The
heart pumps oxygenated and deoxygenated blood
on different sides. The types of blood vessels
include arteries, capillaries and veins.
