CORE SHELTER PROJECT 1991 PHILIPPINES

Concept

After Typhoon Isang in 1987 where many houses destroyed, the government decided to develop a low-
cost, typhoon-resistant home that residents could construct themselves using local resources. As a
result, the dwellings created are basic, low-cost, and built from a variety of local resources. Poor
individuals can build their own dwellings with technical assistance and the support of friends and
neighbours. The roof and wall panels of more recently constructed shelters have been made of more
durable materials. The buildings' wind resistance is a critical component of their design, as it guarantees
that the houses, while made with the same materials as before, are no longer demolished by severe
winds.

Calamity Resistant Features:

 To create continuity, anchorage connecting the roof to the ground using cement footings is
used.
 Roof trusses support a four-sided roof shape.
 To guarantee stability, use additional bracing and anchoring on the wall and ceiling.

Four wooden corner posts are attached to partially sink concrete pedestals, and four wooden side posts
are located midway on each wall and are similarly fastened to partially sink concrete pedestals. These
solid foundations, along with the superstructure's tight anchoring, assist to keep the house stable during
typhoons. Because these modules are not necessary for the dwelling's wind resistance, costs are kept
low by utilizing inexpensive, locally available materials for roofing, walling, and flooring. One of the most
important aspects of the design is that it should be simple to comprehend and construct. Local workers
may be trained in the simple procedures required, and the technology can be quickly disseminated
without the need for lengthy and complicated training courses. Apart from the fundamental
architectural features pertaining to wind resistance, all aspects of house design and aesthetics are left to
the individual beneficiaries to create as they choose. As a consequence, the families may be rightfully
proud of a diverse selection of extremely distinctive residences.
