Self-Concept is what perception, beliefs and opinions we have about

ourselves who is greatly influenced by many factors. Growing up I was always the
shy boy who was very reserved. I was never a social butterfly and even up until
this day I am not. Throughout elementary and middle school, I was always quiet
because I did not want people to judge me or be made fun of. I remember
wanting to be like the popular kids who always knew everybody and talked to
everyone at school. During my high school years, my personality started to
change. I became more open minded and did not really care about other people's
opinions. My focus was in my future. I believe over time I have learned to be
hardworking, self-motivated, and overall a positive person.

Many people can say that I am a hardworking person. Everyday afterschool

I would always come home and start on my homework. I made sure to get
everything done for the next day. My mother did not get her dream job as a
teacher after graduating so I took that as an example to work hard and put effort
into graduating high school. I wanted to be a role model for my younger sister,
brothers and make my mom proud of me. By the age of fifteen, I started working
at my first part-time job and since then I’ve been working. I have grown up in a
relatively small family that has always emphasized the importance of family and
hard work. I believe that I exhibit most of my mother's characteristics, which I am
extremely proud of. She has always been a hard-working person for her family
which is a quality I picked up from her. Having a broken family is what self-
motivates me to stay in school. I want to graduate in college and get my
Associates degree and aim higher after that. I continue to take classes every
semester to accomplish my goal in graduating. This encourages me to work
harder for a better life and not be part of any statistics or thoughts people may
have. Also another thought that motivates me is seeing my friends and peers
graduate. This motivates me because seeing them graduate gives me hope that I
too can be that person. I push myself in my studies so I can accomplish as much as
them and also have a better future to come.

Throughout my life I have always been a positive person. Many of my

classmates and friends would say I am a good person because in no matter what
situation I am I always try to find the best in it. I display self-control and consider
others more important than me. They would say that I am a good listener and try
to help others as much as possible. In school I try to be optimistic. For example,
while taking a test in a class at school, I have to tell myself that I can do it! This is
encouraging to me, and because of this I perform better. I learn from my mistake
so that next time I can be more successful and do better. Having a positive
attitude has made me a better person today. Various factors have played a role in
which I am today. It is people and events that shape your personality. Overtime
my characteristic has changed and I do believe that my life experience has helped
me shape who I am today. I believe in the end we are all responsible for our own
happiness no matter what life obstacles throws at us. The best way to overcome
any situation is to stay positive and work hard to achieve any goal.

To conclude, I am an outgoing, caring and hardworking individual. I put a

major emphasis on working towards my goal, and for caring about those that I
love. I am also a fun loving guy who shines when he is around many people and
has never heard of the word shy. These traits, coupled with many more are what
make me Erwin Jay Cabantac.

Socrates and The self is a soul. According to Socrates, one's actual
Plato self must not identify with what we
have, our social rank or even our
physique. Rather, Socrates and Plato
claimed well that our real selves are
our souls.
Augustine The self seeks for God The sense of self is the relation to
. God, both by recognizing the love of
God and responding to it through
self-presentation, then self-
realization.. Without finding the love
of God, we could not acquire inner
peace.
Descartes The self isa thinking The thought is about the idea of
thing dualism of the mind and the body.
The individual consists of two parts,
.
a material organism and a non-
material consciousness. In other
words, the intellect makes us people
for Descartes. So the "mental" is the
"true self" for Despartes.
Locke The self is consciousness. The concept of the self is about the
idea of dualism in the mind. Person
is made up of two elements, a
material body and an unsubstantial
intellect. It's the mind that makes us
humans for Descartes, otherwise.
Thus "mind" is the "actual self" for
Descartes.
Hume There is no self. The life of the self depends on our
awareness. If via the process of
introspection we look at our sensory
experience thoroughly, we find that no
self is present. How can that be done?
The only possible conclusion is an
honest and objective one examination
of our experience.
Kant We construct the self It is exactly what our minds do all the
time to build ourselves. Take the raw

family, structured, meaningful world in
which we live and actively synthesize it.
Freud The self is multilayered In the final analysis, the ultimate goals
of the self are the same as the

unconscious self, satisfying wants and
reducing tension to the ideal level. The
conscious self normally takes account of
the realistic requirements of the
circumstances, the implications of
various acts and its overwhelming
desire to preserve the equilibrium of the
entire psychodynamic system, rather
than by means of direct, impulsive and
irrational ways. To that purpose, the
conscious self has the duty to restrain
the unconscious self's incessant
pressures as its primal instincts
constantly seek immediate unloading.
Ryle The self is how you The mind isn't there and so the seat of
the self cannot be, it derives from
behave. conduct. All of us are a bundle of
conduct due to the physical functioning
of the body.
Churchland The self is the brain. Our own self-sense comes from the
physical brain. The soul is like the self.
The soul that resides in the physical
body is immortal.
Merleau-Ponty The self is an embodied The divide of "mental" and
Subjectivity. "physical" is a result of mistaken
thought. The plain fact is that our
self is experienced as a unit in which
the physical and mental are
intertwining effortlessly.
