ACTIVITIES OF DAILY LIVING AMONG ELDERLY

When you age, you gain eight or more extra hours of leisure time each day. alderly are
generally using that extra time to linger a little longer over meals, sleep, do household chores,
and watch a lot more TV. Here is how elderly spend their days.

1.RELAX
Elderly have a lot more time for leisure activities than people who are still working.
People age 65 and older spend an average of just over seven hours per day on leisure and
sports, compared to just over five hours among the overall population. Seniors spend twice as
much time relaxing and thinking (0.6 hours) and reading (0.7 hours) compared to the overall
population (0.3 hours for both activities), and are equally as likely as younger people to surf
the Internet for leisure and spend time socializing with friends, and only slightly less likely to
exercise.

2.WATCH TV
The elderly watch an averaging 4.2 hours of TV-viewing each day. Men age 65
and older watch an hour more of TV daily (4.73 hours) than older women (3.74 hours). And
people age 75 and older watch more TV than any other age group.

3.SLEEP
The only thing seniors spend more time on than leisure activities is sleep. seniors
spend nine hours per day sleeping, compared with 8.7 hours daily among the population as a
whole.

4.EAT AND DRINK

The typical senior age 65 and above, spends about an hour and 15 minutes each day
eating and drinking. They linger slightly longer over meals, for an average of about an hour
and a half each day.
COMMON CHRONIC DISEASES AMONG ELDERLY

80% of seniors have at least one chronic health condition and 68% have two or more. Despite
these statistics, older adults can maximize health and quality of life by managing symptoms
from existing health conditions and reducing the risk of developing other conditions.

1.HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE.

Also called “hypertension” is a serious condition that affects 58% of seniors on
Medicare. It’s often called the “silent killer” because it has no symptoms. But it damages blood
vessels and increases the risk of serious (and sometimes fatal) conditions like stroke and
heart attack.

2.HIGH CHOLESTEROL
Nearly half of all seniors on Medicare were treated for high cholesterol. When the body
has too many bad fats, arteries get clogged and cause heart disease.

3.ARTHRITIS
Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis. It’s a joint disease where the joint
cartilage is breaking down over time. That causes swelling and inflammation which leads to
pain and stiffness. Some people dismiss arthritis as occasional aches or stiffness, but chronic
arthritis pain can be so severe that seniors are forced to make unwanted lifestyle changes.
