Melalui surat ini Kepala Pusat Studi mengundang Seluruh Dosen STT, Mahasiswa S1 dan S2 untuk
mengikuti seminar yang akan diselenggarakan pada :

Jumat, tanggal 15 & 22 Oktober 2021 pukul 19.00 – 21.00 WIB

Seminar ini akan dibawakan oleh Prof. Gary M. Burge, Phd. (Dean of the Faculty, Visiting Professor of
New Testament, Calvin Theological Seminary USA). Academic lectures ini akan dibawakan sepenuhnya
dalam Bahasa Inggris.

Adapun materi-materi yang akan dibahas Dr. Gary Burge dalam Academic Lectures ini adalah sebagai
berikut:

Greco-Roman World of The New Testament Era

1. Greco-Roman Political World: From Alexander to the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 th AD and

beyond (e.g., Trajan, Hadrian); some topics in this category, e.g.,:
a) Alexander and Hellenization: Greek as lingua franca, polis or city state, religious syncretism
(for the last topic, it may be discussed further in the third session below)
b) Roman empire and pax romana, and how they affect/influence early Christian communities
and their movements
2. Jewish community in the Greco-Roman world; some topics in this category, e.g.
a) Maccabean revolt, destruction of Jerusalem by Titus, and other revolts (Jewish-Roman wars)
b) Herodians
c) Procurators
d) Jewish diaspora and Hellenistic Judaism (including the LXX)
3. Religions, Philosophy, and Culture; some topics in this category, e.g.;
a) God-soaked culture, Artemis/Diana cult, Roman Imperial cult
b) Sacrificial rites
c) Magical rites
d) Platonism, Stoicism, Epicureanism, Hybrid philosophy (?)
e) Greco-Roman socio-linguistic world
4. Law and Social-Economy structure in Greco-Roman milieu; some topics in this category, e.g.;
 a) Patriarchal Greco-Roman household (paterfamilias)
b) Citizenship and Censuses
c) Trade, Money, and taxes
d) Roman law: such as punishment for criminals, prison system, death on the cross, etc.
e) Persecution of Christians under the Roman empire
