Know How Mahadasha Rule on Your life
and Your Future

In Vedic Astrology, “Desha” (the country), “Kaala” (the time period) &“Patra”
(the person) are three crucial factors which are analysed in making astrological
predictions.

“Kaala” is a Sanskrit word which refers to the planetary time period a native is
going through and is commonly known as Mahadasha. The term Mahadasha
comprises of two words- Maha meaning major and Dasha meaning operating
period of the planet.

We have a number of questions boggling our mind, for which we don’t have
any answers.

For example:

When will I get a Job?

When will I get married?

Should I try business or do job?

And many more

These types of questions having uncertainties can be easily answered with the
help of Mahadasha. In order to know more about Mahadasha and its
importance, keep reading this article.

Understanding Mahadasha and its basis

Astrologically, it is believed that when a person is born, he is under the

influence of a matrix of planets called Navgrahas. These planets then govern
the life of the native depending upon its placements and strength in the birth
chart.
During any point in life, a native undergoes the effect of a specific planet for a
longer period of time which represents the Mahadasha of the birth chart.

The Dasha system works on the basis of Nakshatras- “the lunar mansion” in
Hindu Astrology. There are 27 nakshatra in the astrological system which is
governed by 9 different planets.

For example, Mrigshira (5th), Chitra (14th), Dhansitha(23rd) are three Nakshatras
that is ruled by planet Mars. Therefore, a person born in the above three
nakshatra will have its running Mahadasha of Mars during the time of his birth.

There are many different Dasha Systems that have been used in the context of
Vedic Astrology such as Vimshottari Dasha, Ashtotari Dasha and Shodasttotri
Dasha etc.

Out of nearly 42 Dasha System mentioned by Rishi Prasara, Vimshottari Dasha

has been mostly followed due to its exactness and subtle nature.

What is Vimshottari Dasha?

In Vimshottari Dasha calculation, each person is assumed to live a life of 120

years. These 120 years is further divided into 9 different sections called the
Mahadasha, also known as planetary periods. The different Mahadasha and
time periods are shown below in a tabulated way.

Mahadasha Duration
Ketu 7 years
Venus 20 years
Sun 6 years
Moon 10 years
Mars 7 years
Rahu 18 years
Jupiter 16 years
Saturn 19 years
Mercury 20 years
The Mahadasha runs in a consecutive way in a back to back manner. For
example, if a person starts his Venus Mahadasha, then after its completion the
Mahadasha of Sun starts for 6 years and so on.

Antardasha under Mahadasha

In each Mahadasha, there is yet another dasha that runs parallely which is
called the Antardasha of planets. Each Mahadasha will have Antardasha of 9
different planets, the duration of which is proportionate to its own planetary
time period.

For example, in the Rahu Mahadasha, the Antardasha of Venus is of 3 years.

The calculation of it is shown below:

Rahu Mahadasha-18 years

Part of Rahu Mahadasha in 120 years= 18/120

Venus period in 120 years= 20

Therefore, the Antardasha of Venus in Rahu Mahadasha is calculated by:

(18/120)* 20= 3 years.

The first Antardasha for each Mahadasha remains the same. For example, a
Jupiter Mahadasha will have the first Antardasha of Jupiter.

Next, the Saturn Antardasha will come into picture. Therefore, the Antardasha
of all 9 planets will run in every Mahadasha of planets.

Pratyantar Dasha, Sookshm Dasha & Prann Dasha

In a similar fashion, each Antardasha is followed by a Pratyantar Dasha,
Sookshm Dasha and Prann Dasha which runs under the Mahadasha for smaller
intervals of the time period.

So a planetary period at any given time looks like: Mahadasha/

Antardasha/Pratyantar Dasha/Sookshm Dasha/Prann Dasha. However,
Sookshm Dasha and Prann Dasha are only sometimes taken into consideration
for getting more refined results.

The relationship between dasha and sub-dasha is shown below:

Mahadasha

Antardasha

Pratyantar Dasha

Sookshm
Dasha

Prann
Dasha

Sequencing of Mahadasha

When a native is born, his first Mahadasha will be of the planet of

corresponding Nakshatras wherever the Moon is placed in the lunar mansion.

For example, a person born in Anuradha Nakshatra will experience the first
Mahadasha of Saturn. The duration of the first Mahadasha will depend upon
the total degree swept by the moon in that particular Nakshatra.

After the completion of the Saturn Mahadasha, he will undergo a complete

period of Mercury Mahadasha> Ketu Mahadasha> Venus Mahadasha> Sun
Mahadasha > Moon Mahadasha> Mars Mahadasha > Rahu Mahadasha>
Jupiter Mahadasha in a cyclic fashion.

However, it is almost difficult for any native to go through the complete cycle
of Mahadasha of 120 years. To mention again, each Mahadasha will parallely
have Antardasha, Pratyantar Dasha, Sookshm Dasha and Prann Dasha running
in tandem at any point of time.

Timing of events in Mahadasha

Each planet in Vedic Astrology, due to its placement, strength and conjunction
can work either in a benefic or a malefic way. Also these planets are natural
significators of many things in a person’s life.

Jupiter for example, is the significator of wealth, wisdom, marriage (in girls)
and progeny; so a person undergoing the Mahadasha can witness results in the
aforesaid departments.

Likewise, Saturn represents discipline, hard-work, career, efforts, pains and

troubles in astrology, so a person undergoing the Saturn Mahadasha can face a
lot of trials and tribulations during its operating period.

Apart from that, planets due to their placement can also give results of that
house when its Mahadasha is running.

Planet in an exalted condition and a good placement can give positive results
during its Mahadasha, while a planet in debilitation will offer bad results during
its major period.

On the other side, even a Mahadasha of exalted planet can turn out to be bad
if it is malefic for the chart.

Conventionally, the Mahadasha of planets ruling the Kendra Houses (1st, 4th,
7th, 10th) and the Trikona Houses (1st, 5th, 9th) gives auspicious results;
whereas the Mahadasha of planets related to the Dusthana Houses (6th , 8th ,
12th ) are usually unfavourable.
Besides, each Mahadasha is further accompanied by Antardasha and
Pratyantar Dasha working in tandem, the results would vary accordingly.

Suppose, if a native is looking to get married, then the Mahadasha &

Antardasha of 2nd house, 7th house and 8th house lords should be running in
order to get results.

Other than that, Mahadasha of Jupiter or Venus can also confirm marriage as
they are the natural significators (Karakas) of marriage in Astrology.

Importance of Mahadasha

Mahadasha plays a vital role in analysing the charts and making the
predictions. It helps us understand the current situation and future lives of the
natives.

If a chart promises a person to be a billionaire, then only a favourable

Mahadasha of 2nd lord, 11th lord can guarantee it.

All the Panch Mahapurusha yogas and other beneficial yogas can fructify only
when the Mahadasha of the participating planet runs in the chart.

If a person doesn’t undergo any beneficial Mahadasha, then all these beneficial
yogas will not work out for the native.

Mahadasha has the ability to answer all your questions of your life, whether it
is for job, career, finance, relationships and etc. But a comprehensive and
meticulous study of chart has to be made before jumping to any conclusions.

Rahu in Mythology

According to Hindu mythology, Rahu (the head) and Ketu (the tail) was born
out of Svarbhanu (an Asura), after his head got severed by Mohini (a disguise
of Lord Vishnu), when he drank the immortal nectar extracted from the Ksheer
sagar (milky ocean).

Although his body got divided into two, but he became immortal and was
awarded the status of planets.

Rahu in Astrology- Good or Bad

Rahu has been given the status of a shadowy planet, who is a cheat, a liar, and
a disillusionist. It signifies a rebel, a rule breaker, who will go against norms
and laws to satisfy his needs.

He is obsessed with his desires which make him a scam artist. He is a maven of
all bad things and rules over smoke, darkness, drugs, and alcohol etc.
On the contrary, it has been found that some people undergoing Rahu
Mahadasha have risen to the zenith of their career and amassed huge amount
of wealth. Some great politicians have risen to the top posts of the countries
during this dasha bhukti.

Many path breaking technological developments have been made during its
period. Scientists also have a well-placed Rahu in the 8th house of the birth
chart which makes them obsessed to their researches.

Rahu can becalled the “hero of Kaliyuga” as this dasha brings about
tremendous growth.

Rahu Characteristics

Rahu works well when placed well in air and water signs. It gives benefic
results when placed in the Upachya houses (2nd, 6th, 10th house) of the chart.

Rahu in general, amplifies the characteristics of the house where it sits and the
significator of that house becomes its main moto in life. He works restlessly
and ruthlessly for his goal.

For example, it placed in the 2nd house will make the native keep running for
money. It represents foreign elements, so people may travel to foreign
countries during this period.

Now, we will see the effects of Rahu Mahadasha.

keep him grilled. He will set boundaries for him and all the bad doings of Rahu
will be brought to justice.

considerable delay in all his efforts; sometimes the hard work wouldn’t bear

education. He becomes more intelligent and takes calculated decisions. During

backfire. There can be skin or nerve related problems during this period.

Rahu/Ketu: Rahu &Ketu are 180 degrees apart and is totally different
behaviour. This is a challenging period, where things would not work out as
planned.

There can be sudden accidents and medical surgeries in the life of the native, if
Ketu is placed in Dusthana houses (6th& 8th).
Ketu represents separation; therefore people can witness a job change,
divorce &relocation. If there is a Kaal Sarp Dosha in a kundali, this period can
be extremely hard.

Rahu/Venus: This is a period of indulgence where Rahu will be obsessed with

beauty, love, romance and physical pleasures. He will become materialistic and
can travel to exotic locations. Due to a malefic Rahu, the native may cheat his
spouse and can get involved in immoral activities. People with malefic Rahu-
Venus conjunct can turn into a womaniser and get embroiled in scandals.

Rahu/Sun: A malefic Rahu and a weak Sun may cause a loss of reputation for
the native. He will bear losses in government related activities. If Rahu and Sun
are conjunct, then this period will bring a downfall in his career and there can
be a troubled relationship with his father. As Sun represents king, people can
develop a false sense of ego during Rahu Mahadasha.

Rahu/Moon: In the Antardasha of Moon, people can face troubles due to

females. He will have a bad relationship with his mother. Many people go into
depression during this time. It will make the person very emotional and he
would react strongly on petty issues.

A tight Rahu Moon conjunction can also drive people mad. During this time,
people can also suffer from hallucination or will have a fear from unseen
things. All his confidence will sink in and he will become an introvert.

Rahu/Mars: This last bhukti of Mars will make the person courageous and he
will come out from the illusions of Rahu. He will become bold again and will be
highly charged to take actions.

This period can make a person very competitive and will make them
workaholic. On the contrary, this period can make people very hot-headed and
he will get into sudden fights anywhere.

Shani Sade Sati- The Tumultuous Phase
of 7.5 Years
One of the most common astrological phenomena usually talked about is the
Shani Sade sati. In fact, the word Shani Sade sati has become the bread and
butter for most of the business astrologers and quacks. It is during this period
80% of the people visit astrologers and most of the time gets cheated out of
their hard earned money.

This period of Sade sati runs for approximately 7 ½ years, so you can
understand the importance of it. We will also clear the common notion that
Sade sati is always bad and it brings troubles for the natives.

So, if you are among those who are experiencing Sade sati now or have been
forewarned of its approach in your birth chart, keep reading this article till the
end.

Understanding Shani Sade sati

Shani Sade sati is a time period of 7 ½ years of Saturn. When the transiting
Saturn comes in the 12th house from the Moon; the period of Sade sati starts.
During this period, Shani transits the 12th house, 1st house and the 2nd house
from the natal Moon sequentially. As Shani stays for nearly 2.5 years in each
sign, this entire period lasts for 7.5 years.

Since Saturn is the second largest planet in the solar system, its transit affects
the lives of the native in a greater way either for good or for bad. Shani Sade
sati usually comprises of three phases of 2.5 years each. We will cover each
phase in a broader way.

Phases of Shani Sade sati

1st Phase of Sade sati- Initiation Phase
This period of first phase is also known as first Dhaiyya in astrology. During this
phase, Shani Dev aka Saturn traverses the 12th house from the natal Moon and
remains there for almost 2.5 years. This phase marks the initiation of Sade sati
period and is technically known as the “Rising Phase” of the Sade sati period.

The 12th house governs losses, travelling to foreign land, isolation and prisons.
It also represents expenditures and hospitalization. Besides, it also governs the
left eye and feet in our body. Therefore, during this phase the above
mentioned matters will be affected for the native.

2nd Phase of Sade sati- The Peak Phase

This phase is more important as Shani traverses the 1st house of the lunar chart
and is directly in conjunction to the moon. This is called the Peak phase in Sade
sati; reason being it creates too much mental stress in our lives.

As Moon represents our mind, this period can also cause depression and
mental fogginess. This phase also lasts for 2.5 years and is often called as
second Dhaiyya.

The first house of the lunar chart governs our physique, our personality and
mental disposition. Therefore matters related to our physical and mental
health will be more prominent.

Last Phase of Sade sati- Settling Phase

This is the third and final phase of Sade sati and usually runs for the rest 2.5
years out of the 7 and ½ year period. During this phase, Saturn progresses to
the 2nd house from the Moon and affects the matters related to that house.

As this is the last phase of Sade sati, this phase is not that bad and the Shani
Dev minimizes his harmful effect on the native during this 2.5 years. Upon
completion of this phase, the testing period of Sade sati gets over.
Effects of Sade sati
The effects of this 7 and a ½ year period can be categorised into three different
2.5 years period with respect to the transit of Saturn in the lunar chart. We will
now see as to how this transit affects us in general.

Effects during 1st phase

During this phase, Saturn transits in the first house and is 12th from the moon.
The native will see a sudden rise in expenditure due to unknown
circumstances; his financial conditions suffer quite a lot during this period.

It may make the native travel to foreign places which would not be quite
pleasing. People get detached from their near and dear ones during this time.
As 12th house rules prisons, jails and social ostracisation, a native undergoing
the first Dhaiyya may even land in jail, if the Saturn is malefic in the chart.

Relationships and domestic happiness suffer a huge setback and it can also
lead to separation from the spouse or the family. The things that you
considered as important will no longer serve you and will finally vanish away
from your life.

The people whom you considered as important will start withdrawing from
your life. This gradual shift in life will start bringing mental agonies and worries
for the native. It is commonly seen that a lot of breaks up happen during this
period among love birds.

Effects during the 2nd phase

Saturn is conjunct your natal moon during this period which creates a vicious
combination. In this time, you undergo a lot of mental tension which can even
land you into depression. Relationships suffer, especially with the female folks
especially with your mother and spouse.

People are seen to contemplate a lot during this period and often brood about
their glorious past. Sleepless nights are often experienced during this period
and the native is under constant pressure how to improve his career and
relationships.

Interestingly, it is found that a lot of break ups happen during this period.
Health problems especially related to mind are very common during the 2 nd
phase. People with a bad 8th house, a weak moon and a malefic Saturn can also
witness suicidal tendencies during this period.

Second Dhaiyya of Sade sati is extremely powerful, and it affects people deeply
having a full moon or no moon in the chart.

Effects during the last phase

The last phase of Sade sati causes troubles in earning, wealth management and
problems related to inheritance. Family problems also surface during this
period. A native may get into financial troubles due to a bad decision which
can erode his hoarded wealth.

It is often recommended to stay away from speculative businesses like stock

markets during this time. It is quite commonly seen that people during this
phase often get into conflicts with their siblings due to matters of inheritance
and property.

There are chances that a native may earn less to no money during this period.
Overall, this gives a tough time in the financial front. Body parts such as eyes,
teeth and mouth gets affected during this time.

But, will Shani Sade sati always be bad as claimed by the astrologers?

Sade sati- The silver lining

Although this period is marked with umpteen difficulties for most of the native
but for few this is great time to reap the benefits of their good Karmas done
previously.

Shani Dev blesses the natives abundantly during this period with great career,
health, wealth and overall prosperity during this period.
Narendra Modi for example, became the PM of India during his Shani Sade
sati. But whether Shani Dev blesses or curses the native during this period, a
native will definitely have to work very hard and lead a disciplined life.
